Gypsies Go To Heaven

I could break glasses while watching this movie.

Wonderfully jubilant & achingly tragic musical melodrama with boundles romantic resonance. It hardly matters how contrived & bare bones the plot feels for it's a film that will completely wash over you if you let it. Conjures a lovely magical atmosphere with uncanny cinematography and editing. Grigore Grigoriu is pretty intense and Svetlana Toma is just perfect. Need I say the music is great? Although it's clearly not trying to be Shakespeare, I can't help but feel it's a tiny bit underwritten.

How to send gypsies to heaven. A fine movie indeed. I did not like much of the singing parts though the story, acting and directing was worth to enjoy. I have seen this flick several times.

Sincere and sometimes quite psychedelic story with strange editing work. Roma people are rarely depicted so positively.

Gypsy soap opera - but the final impression is nice.

An ebullient combination of musical romance and magical Gypsy fairy tale. There are two minor problems and one major one, though. First, the dubbing is pretty bad. Second, Grigoriu is kind of a sourpuss and it's hard to relate to his character, although he does burn with intensity. And most egregiously, the story ends with an unconvincing bit of unearned tragedy. However, definitely worth watching for the lively song & dance, Svetlana Toma's charming performance, and several wonderful moments.
