I had never played any Phoenix Wright games, only seen bits of them here and there, so I had no idea what I was getting into. Maybe this is why I loved it so much. This shit is straight up God tier of unexpectedly good movie.

I couldn't have stuck with this if I wasn't a fan of the game series. While it's nice to see it adapted this (particularly visually) faithfully, it just makes me want to stop watching and play the games. The story clearly wasn't conceived for a non-interactive medium, and I don't think they could have made it work without diverging too much from the format of the games for it to be worth adapting. The underuse of the signature music, and some miscasting, hurts it. I wish i could like this more.

Now here's an irony: The only people who would put up with a film executed as hamfistedly as Gyakuten Saiban are the ones who already know every single plot point. It's probably worth seeing, just as a curiosity, if you're a die-hard fan of the series, but as a movie, it leaves much to be desired.

This started off wacky and fun but was much too long for its own good. This feels like a missed opportunity more than anything else. But I really can't think of another director who could've pulled this off, flawed as it is, it's still impressive.

Takashi Miike looked at the Ace Attorney games and said, "You know, this is pretty over-the-top... but it could be SO MUCH MORE." The style and tone here is very different, but it's a fascinating filter, and clearly done with love - there are so many gestures and references, so many carefully fixed plot points, and so many places where everyone involved was like, "Okay, you know this game mechanic that doesn't make sense in real life, here's how we can make it make sense and be cool". Super fun.

The only good videogame adaptation ever made? Possibly, because Gyakuten Saiban actually feels like its goddamn source material. There's no question you're watching a movie version of the game, not some bland action movie that happens to have some of the same names. This is essentially a remix of the first four cases, changed and blended together in reasonable ways. Rushed incredibly with most of the flavor text gone, and the humor is too self-aware. For fans only, but commendable nonetheless.

Definitely one of the better video game movies (though, let's be honest, not tons of competition there). It has some intrigue and has the same goofiness from the game series.

It's not often I am able to say I know the original well enough to judge an adaption to this extent, but I am now able to understand the point of view of many purists for other adaptations.

Drags a bit, but overall a fun watch, even if you're not familiar with the games (I'm not).

Takashi Miike and company have created what might be the best video game to movie adaptation yet. With a few in-jokes to please fans of the series, Phoenix Wright relies on the strength of its story and its strong main characters to move the movie forward. Humor abounds thanks to a smart script, and plenty of visual gags, this court based drama-comedy sets the bar high for future video game movies. The only real problem is that is drags in places thanks to it's 135 minute run time.

may is kinda hot and the costume design is faithful to the game, but the film is overlong and disappointingly boring :/
