Rancher Lee Hackett is one of the old breed, used to making his own laws and settling things with a gun. He has tried to make his two sons in his own image, and with the elder he has more than succeeded, to the extent that he is accused of murdering a half-breed. But his younger son is different, eschewing the old rules and even becoming drawn to the sister of the murdered man. Lee starts to find that his way of doing things is no longer working. (imdb)

In "Gunman's Walk," Van Heflin's portrayal of Lee Hackett is compelling. He adds depth and complexity to the character, making his harshness understandable, even if not agreeable. Similarly, Tab Hunter's performance as Ed is equally impressive. He captures the volatility and inner turmoil of a young man striving to forge his identity under his father's formidable shadow. Viewed August 25, 2021. As directed by Phil Karlson, the Freudian overtones and political subtext (about the foundation of violence and privilege on which the US was built, and the way these values persist throughout generations) take a backseat to the palpable, physical force of the conflict between two men with a complicated history.
