A film that has aged quite a lot, full of cliches and stereotypes with some really bad music. In other words, a Ron Howard movie.

It doesn't ever reach its full potential. Keaton, Wantanabe, and company give it their all, but they can't quite overcome the screenplay's slow pacing. The interesting premise is for the most part wasted. The dramatic elements work way better, which falls in line with much of the rest of Howard's filmography (for the most part he's just not a good comedic director). Oddly enough the midwestern blue collar themes are very reminiscent of Roseanne, and this acts almost as a precursor of sorts.

Funny movie of Ron Howard, but very weak as cinema.

In the previous movie by this name, the American attitude toward the Japanese (with Randolph Scott showing the way) favored annihilation. This one, forty-odd years later, inclines toward compromise. There is a modest amount of crow to be eaten by Americans (the movie's bravest moments); but in the end, compromise doesn't stand in the way of anyone's greater happiness, success, popularity, anything. What kind of compromise is that?

The factory scenes were shot in my hometown. That's the redeeming feature of this film.
