The scene opens in an artist's studio where the unfinished statue of William Tell stands upon a pedestal. A clown appears and sticks a clay arm and clay head on the statue, thus completing it. He places a large brick on top of the head to make it stick. When he turns his back the statue turns into a living representation of William Tell, and seizing the brick from the top of his head, hits the clown a heavy blow upon the back. (imdb)

One of the earlier and simpler takes on a type of stop trick picture Méliès did quite a bit of; both the set up and execution are a little too obvious here in comparison to the later versions. Still cute, though.

Not the "real" William Tell but a lifesize homunculus that turns on his creator. Melies's genius here is that he treats one of the largest and growing horrors of the next century in a light, comic way: how the hell do we keep our tech under control? For the last 65 years, it's been nukes. Tomorrow it could be nanotech, Von Neumann machines, and Flying Spaghetti Monster knows what other sort of Frankenstein-like creations we decide to make for profit or whim
