While technically sound (esp. the visual effects used in Act 3) and portraying serious subject matter, Gernika is one of those international co-productions where the disparate characters and languages - a US reporter, Spanish guide, German photographer, etc - don't gel. The film spends an hour giving us a history lesson through the actions of these civilians, and trying to build a romance which lacks credibility. The ending is bombastic. A fair effort but its emotional payload lands off-target.
