From the legendary Shaw Brothers, and succeeded by the equally surreal "Mo", Gu follows detective Bobby Wong (Melvin Wong) in the investigation of the murder of a young girl. When the girl's father (Fei Ai) admits to the murder, claiming he was under a black mage's spell (with physical proof), Bobby delves further. What follows is a colorful and occasionally sickening look at a reality-bending battle between the black mage and a monk called to battle him. (Summary by 1qw3er5)

At the beginning of this, I thought it was going to be the standard Shaw Brothers exploitation Black Magic fest but I was pleasantly surprised. This felt like something from Kolchak The Night Stalker, horror, mystery, and a touch of the grotesque.

Beautifully rich colors and absurdly entertaining scenes, Gu is a visual treat. The monk's attacks through the camera, the black mage's convoluted spells and some of the most impressive "corn-starch and puppet" effects are punctuated with very interesting camera work that makes Gu a thoroughly entertaining freak-out
