Hey, it's a Greengrass-Damon collaboration so it should be at least good. Unfortunately, this attempt at scrutinizing the moral implications of the war in Iraq is downright disappointing and comes off as extremely biased and insubstantial. The frenzied storytelling feels so contrived that it's hard to get into it. It is at its core a poorly written action film masquerading as a political commentary.

Damon's character in no way can fit into 'realistic' nature of the film. He is a straightforward hero here, and his motivation is never explained. The fact that there is something in this film that tickles dumb self-righteous Americans who are living in denial the wrong way makes me happy. But at the same time I can't ignore the fact that this film is too shallow and simplistic to bring any real strong political message, and as an entertainment flick it is mediocre.

Full on action packed from the get go, no one's saying that this is supposed to be a true story--so get over it and watch it like the action/war/thriller it is. There are no lacking pieces in this movie, and it definitely goes well with a big old bag of popcorn.

Not merely a picaresque, but an almost quaintly Candide-ish parable, in which we follow a naïve adventurer's sojourn through a corrupt world. The movie arrived a few years too late, and is too devoted to Greengrass's simple-minded universe of (shall we say?) "action (pseudo-)realism", to really constitute any kind of effective critique, yet is still superior to and more interesting than Bigelow's abominable Oscar-winning effort. Seems to build up to the climactic title card: "Directed by P.G."

A fast-paced action film in which Damon, an actor I'm not normally particularly fond of, is very convincing. If you like Greengrass' style or enjoyed the frenetic chaos of the military scenes in 'Black Hawk Down', you'll probably be entertained enough to forgive the, regrettably, mediocre script.

Greengrass does his usual thing by stringing together epilepsy inducing scenes along with faux operations lingo for "realism." Unfortunately for him this was released when most of the U.S. (and world) is suffering political fatigue from the war in Iraq. The message was a bit heavy handed but not as false as the right wing peanut gallery claims. Could have used a more intelligent dramatic pace rather than Damon doing silly action heroics as a rogue soldier with special ops wankery tossed in.

While the Green Zone is very well shot and features an impressive cast the entire point of the film seems like a mute point at this stage. It's tremendously late and terribly simplistic, though correct. As an action vehicle it doesn't work because it's got a dividing political message and as a film with a political point it doesn't work either because it's too little too late. Still, it's a fun if misguided action-flick.

this could have had an intense impact if it were shot five years ago, at the heyday of the wmd arguments. greengrass has a knack for captivating the attention and keeping the tension high throughout the movie, but the premise of the story is somewhat soiled by its didactic overtone. it is well produced, and its message is quite direct, but still, those who expect bourne are a bit let down. damon is solid all around, but i can't say the same for the shaky camerawork.

An anemic attempt to get across a simplistic message. It becomes clear early on (7 minutes on my watch) what the film's getting at. Sloppy, rushed and uncoordinated, feels as though it was written, and directed might I add, by a whining 15 year old. You know a movie is bad when the best thing it has going for itself is Jason Isaacs' moustache.

The problem isn't script or direction - both hit the ground running & barely stop 4 breath -but the narrative itself. Since it's a real-world situation we already know the ending, but worse, the story hinges on an entirely conjectured plot point. Yes, the intelligence on WMD's is 1 of the worst f-ups in US history, but this takes a murky situation & turns it black and white. As a result it feels like a very expensive episode of 24 instead of the definitive expose of a possible war conspiracy.

I'm liking Matt Damon more and more, and alongside a fantastic cast he still stands out as the most fantastic. Greengrass is treading a lot of old ground but this Iraq War film might just be the best one off the Greengrass/Damon wagon; though he seems to have forgotten that it has to stand up on its own - it often feels a bit like the middle film of a trilogy with no trilogy. The flow is overall good, but it feels like it's a part of a larger whole, and the whole isn't there.

Historical fiction is supposed to at least parallel historical reality, but any of the specifics in this are total fiction, particularly the person who is the point of contention in the film, Gen. al-Rawi. No such person as he existed, nor did a mysterious meeting in Jordan. In fact, an Iraqi general, Air vice-Marshall Sada, has reported repeatedly that he talked to Iraqi pilots who'd flown chemical WMDs to Syria just before the US invasion. The BS propaganda spoils a lot of good action.

As an attempt to come to grips with the venal and ugly motivations of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, it is murky and confused in its plotting, relying too often on unreasonable coincidences to fill in the blanks; it's glib to describe this as “Bourne in Iraq”, but the reteaming of star and director, and inclusion of charged action scenes, make the description valid. At least the queasy-cam is not as pervasive this time around, making it marginally easier on the digestive system!

Admitting that America lied about the WMD's seems to be a noble thing for an American movie to do but it starts to seem less noble when it goes on to say that it was not America that lied but that certain 'bad guys' within American hierarchy lied to certain 'good guys', and still less when it tells a fairy tale in which one of these good guys puts his neck on the line to set the record straight. Preposterous! All this BS aside, this is a watch-and-forget action movie suitable for passing time.

Solid conspiracy thriller with a vast political agenda. Greengrass expertly crafts fast-paced, breakneck action scenes with heavy underlying tension and realism. I'm not a big fan of shaky-cam, and this film had plently of it so obviously that detracts enjoyability in my experience. The plot of course is intelligent and flows for the rest of the film, but concludes in one of the most emotionless and boring endings ever commited to film. It's good, but doesn't capture the excellence of Bourne.

Yeah, so the action's very good obviously. And it's not a bad movie. But... well... it's not really up to snuff as far as Greengrass and his very high standards usually go. The story is telegraphed from beginning to end. Difficult to go more into it without spoilers. What's left is a fairly by-the-numbers action thriller. I'm just a bit underwhelmed.

After Bigelow's Iraq film I took a chance to check out the other kind of approach to the war. In this time we have more clear Bourne kind of hero who's fighting against the big bad military war and politics machine. The first half is boring without Damon, and the second half is more action driven and thus keeps the intention better on screen. The story is hardly interesting fairy tale in exotic country. All points for Damon.

I get it. The war in Iraq was a bad idea. 'Green Zone' adds itself to the list of too-soon postmortems on the Iraq War, but masks itself as 'Bourne 4'. Bourne it ain't. Miller has only one motivation - finding WMDs. When he sees that there are none, he starts asking questions. Apparently, he's one of only three people to do so. Everyone else is an evil liar or is busy relaxing poolside with the bikini-clad women. It's hard to be thrilled when you're being taught a bad lesson in current events.

A political-agenda film through-and-through, it's also a well-executed thriller with superb craftsmanship, stellar camera-work, and ratcheted tension. In fact, much of the movie excels because the drama is always heightened to such a degree, that any ties to realism cease to matter, and we get caught up in the suspense of the fast-paced action. Matt Damon makes the film's coincidental one-man heroics amidst a web of government conspiracy feel engaging if not plausible.

I couldn't help comparing its depiction of Iraq to that of Generation Kill, which morally and politically it can't hold a candle to (the CIA as the good guys is pretty funny, though I suppose anybody seems like a good guy compared to Cheney). But Greengrass is ruthlessly cinematic in his form, so as an action movie this is pretty kick-ass, at least in the exquisite action scenes themselves, which is the most important part. This movie was put on the inevitable hit list of those continuing to rationalize the fabricated intelligence we accepted as a justification to raid Iraq. Indeed, truth tends to be war's first casualty. Yes, the film too is fiction, uses implausible long-shots and implausibly puts one man in the middle of all the action. It is a thriller, not a documentary. But the facts ever present and the essence of the neocon injustices have by now been made very evident.

Greengrass has made a fast-paced and slick action film where rough-and-ready camerawork and unsexy visuals don't matter, because tension is consistently high and things are always moving forwards. Some equally unsexy and rough-and-ready politics is woven into the story to provide some context and a strong statement, but the level of realism prevents the stakes from getting truly interesting. A good watch but there's more enjoyment for me in silly high-concept actioners like Taken or District 9.

It had typical Paul Greengrass shaky cam, but it wasn't as distracting as it was in the Bourne movies, at least not until the ending chase sequence, which went on for too long. Green Zone is a mixed bag. The action sequences are nothing we haven't seen before and aren't really all that exciting. The characters are one dimensional. But the strength of the film lies in its summing up of the failings by the media and US political establishment in the Iraq invasion. When Damon figures out the WMD justification is baloney, the reaction of the Iraqi characters is a justified "so what? How does that help us now?" There the film suggests there are no easy solutions to Iraq.

A natural follow-up to United 93 for Greengrass, though this time the story is fictionalized. It stumbles for the same reason U93 succeeds: the ending is inevitable. In that film it instilled a sense of dread, but here it removes the mystery. Still, preachy as it may be, its moral moments are emotionally potent and the action is taut and suspenseful. Great cast, too. It outlines the problems in Iraq nicely -- no wonder it bombed at box office. "Whatever you want here, I want more than you want."

Was expecting more of a Bourne Identity thriller, but the action was really decent in this modern day explanation of what occurred during the hunt for WMAs in Iraq.

Entertaining scenes, yes, but movies like this are far too delayed to have any kind of real-world impact; the whole film seems somewhat disingenuous if only for timing.
