Based on Charles Dickens' timeless tale, this is a story of the love of a man for an unreachable woman. Updated to modern day New York City, the story concerns a man of modest background who falls in love with a rich girl. But when a mysterious benefactor greenlights the man to make his dreams come true, everything done has the ultimate goal of making Estella fall in love with him... (imdb)

Cuarón fails to deliver with this poor adaptation. Most of the major themes of the novel are underdeveloped leaving only the story of love and heartbreak. Thankfully I've read the novel and seen the BBC mini-series, both of which are great, because this really would cause a person to question Dicken's undeniable talent. The cinematography is a big plus though, and the acting and dialogue are ok...ish.

A disaster that apparently everyone regretted almost immediately, I just don't understand why Cuaron even bothered in the first place (crazy to think of the jump in quality from this to YTMT). Might have been interesting if they had listened to Hawke and made the Pip character black or Hispanic, also Paltrow is beautiful but she's not what I would call seductive.

Play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. Fall in love with a sociopath - end up lamenting in your self-induced misery. If only the characters had been interestingly written at least. Now they are just lifeless puppets that do accordingly to the needs of the melodramatic plot, not themselves.

I had no idea Cuaron and Lubezki delivered such a quintessential 90s movie: saccharine but empty of plot or any character depth, looking gorgeous and shallow at the same time. I felt like this was Cuaron chewed by the glamorous machine of Hollywood, but he just wanted to play by his own rules. Good for us he didn't bow to them like others (cough Guy Ritchie cough).

Well, it lives up to the trailer. Pauline Kael described the look of the David Lean classic as "creamy" and this is "creamy" updated for 1998. Cuaron doesn't exactly seem to have an "angle" into this material (even his better films like GRAVITY or CHILDREN OF MEN are mostly great for their surface pleasures), but I mean why try and resist this stuff? Not only does it look and feel great, but that's probably the best possible cast you could hope for.

The beauty of the romance between Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow still causes me a lightheadedness 16 years after it's release. I expected it to be typically stuffy but gave it a try and it was a good decision. I got reeled into the storyline especially the parts which Robert De Niro, Chris Cooper and especially Anne Bancroft played. I guess I have to justify being a romantic at heart. I'll just say I'm happy I am!

A little too long, but overall a strong movie. I'd recommend the 19s6 original over this tough.

Modern adaptation of Dickins' novel is stunningly shot and directed as can be expected with an Alfonso Cauron production, but it is hurt by dreadful narration that serves no purpose but to point out what it happening on-screen. Take away the narration and it would be a great movie rather than an above average one.

I liked this movie a lot in the past but I watched again today. This time it was a little bit boring for me. The story moves on too slow.

Meh. It's about as good as you're going to get for a modern day adaptation.

A modern version of Charles Dickens's novel, with its hero turned into a brooding artist; despite the care lavished upon it, the picture is devoid of life.

They took Dickens's story (already beaten to death) and turned it into a teenager movie. I do not share the opinion of the filmmakers that a bean shoot like Gwyneth Paltrow is some kind of Ultimate Babe. Not even De Niro can save this one

A visually exciting and original retelling of the classic Dickens tale. Maybe not for story purists who can't handle a modernization like this (David Lean's version will be more your cup of tea), but I thoroughly enjoyed this film and it's excellent score by Patrick Doyle.

I love telling people i saw this picture, they always moan like your mama the first time, oh never mind. I liked the story, the acting all right, the cinematography occasionally beautiful (a few sensual teases) but leans toward giant talking heads. The dialogue & voice over sometimes falters, some cheese, and interestingly no one including the "art" is particularly attractive, so I'm a little vague on why exactly Gwyneth (or Ethan) is worthy of desire, it all works out nicely.
