a maddeningly elusive poker-playing entrepreneur refuses to engage with various looming dilemmas and conflicts pre-civil war. when he finally sheds his cutthroat capitalist garb and chooses a side in love and history it's shot like an emergence from plato's cave, implying that war grows from apathy and inauthentic living, desires left repressed or unreconciled. allegory aside, gotta dig an enigmatic, idea-driven western with characters like 'owen pentecost', 'jumbo means' and 'zeff masterson'.

Checks all the western boxes. Forgettable except for adopting the boy of the man he killed, which they should have expanded upon. Fav scene: escape in a stagecoach at the end.
