I hate this movie, mostly for its timeless quality; the fact that its as ubiquitous and popular now as it was in the late 70's is baffling. And did you know that Stockard Channing was THIRTY-FOUR in that movie? Thirty-four. Playing a high school girl. Oh, and that fucking "Summer Lovin'" song is, at this point, a karaoke standard. Hate it. Hate it all.

So like, in the dance off scene where Sandy is pulled away from Danny and replaced by Cha Cha, um, WTF? First off, are you even allowed to replace your partner in a dance off? And why didn't Danny get Sandy back? And what was a 30 year old doing at a high school dance, anyway?

"Sandy breaks up with John Travolta after he tries to pressure her into sex. For some reason, she immediately regrets this rash decision and sets about remaking herself in the image of the slutty women he seems to prefer. The change includes taking up smoking, changing her mannerisms and even getting rid of her accent."-cracked

I'm not sure they were shooting from a screenplay so much as a dictionary of 1950s slang terms. The fact that all the actors playing high school students were either pushing or well past 30 makes this film even more bizarre.

Its a completely artificial version of 50s American, with false nostalgia and 20/30 year old actors playing teenagers, but this artificiality is what entices me about the film. Its a well made musical, with truly memorable songs, a surprisingly adult tone despite its PG rating (the sexual language is rife), and charismatic and talented actors (its amazing to see Travolta dance with skill on screen), made even more interesting as an obviously artificial world than a recreation of the era.

A terrible adaptation from stage to film, this bears little resemblance to the tough and fiesty little off-broadway musical on which it is based, even losing some of the best songs in the process. Worse, whenever the show has been revived, it's been revised and sanitized to make it more like this misguided mess of a movie. It's all very sad.

I hated it as a teenage Lisa Simpson, as an adult who rewatched with a fellow musical theatre director during COVID, I enjoy it for production value not “moral lessons”. It’s…fun. Stupid fun. Well done for what it is. You’re prolly not gonna love the shallow characters unless you’re pretty shallow too, but that’s okay. Treat it like kabuki. It’s a different kind of artistic experience. The messaging is…busted, but whatevs. It’s the Top-Ramen-with-eggs of entertainment.

Hollywood's last great musical. The film is a double dose of nostalgia as it represents the height of 70s film-making and replicates the 50s greaser movement. For all its production numbers, extensive dance sequences, and soulful songs ("Hopelessly Devoted" is especially powerful), the film really just takes everyone back to those magical high school days when having a girlfriend and a cool car meant you were the King of the World! Fun times & great songs.

An obviously iconic movie with a great soundtrack very good choreography. That being said, the nonexistence of a plot haunts the movie, and it feels like its cultural appeal and significance will wane in time if it hasn't already. It touches important themes but very superficially and ambiguously for modern times.

Criticker thought I'd like this film 9% more than I did. Again, a very close guess, but the reason I'm held back with my score here is because Grease is a film that doesn't really follow any story. There are no real main characters, because everyone is doing something different, and everyone kind of has their own solos to sing, and Danny isn't actually trying to woo Sandy, nor is she him. It's just a number of characters experiencing a number of events, while a number of songs play throughout.

It's possible to be nostalgic for 1950s aesthetic and culture without being nostalgic for its political values, something clearly lost on the creators. From its racism to its clear-cut out-dated gender roles to its rapey men it feels more dated than many of the films from the 50s themselves. On top of that it feels like a jukebox musical but isn't, with the flattest characters and most bare-bone plot to string together the musical numbers. The music is super-catchy though, so who cares, right?

Often called one of the best movie musicals ever, it's carried by strong performances from Travolta, Newton-John, Channing & Conn in particular as well as some memorable music. But, it's hampered by a half-baked romance & bland, boring lead characters who don't grow or learn all that much. The moral themes contradict each other (be yourself, change yourself for others) & many other aspects haven't aged well. There is some good to it & it's worth watching, but it's very, very flawed.

Grease is a strange movie. Is it a love story? A focus on the life of a group of high school kids? It's a little of both and manages to get all the awkwardness of high school fit into it. The trying to be cool, even if you weren't all that cool, the reputations, all the hormones. Cram that all into a movie with music and you have Grease. The story is a bit all over, and the message (if one?) is a bit garbled. Also what about the car that flies into the sky at the end?

It's campy as hell and the musical numbers in this tend to fade from memory as soon as credits roll. However, Travolta is highly amusing as the dopey leader of the greasers. His pronounced chin, hairdo, and movie star good looks seem as about as outlandish as the musical itself. It plays heavily to stereotypes but you can't knock a film where the term "gangbang" is used with complete seriousness. There's also some authentic chemistry to the romance since Travolta married his co-star.

"Grease" is a fun adaptation of a musical that was much more self-aware then the slew of productions that came in its wake. What was once a 70s look back at the 50s in a tongue-in-cheek matter became a full on nostalgia trip for the days of the post-war Nuclear Family and the kids who fought against their parents in their assertion for freedom. 1978's "Grease" lost all sense of satire, but it's still just a fun little cheesy time.

I don't need a guardian Angel to tell me that this was a movie worth watching. Grease is seriously a fun movie. John Travolta is great as Danny, and is a really great singer and dancer (no kidding). Olivia Newton-John is a dream girl in the film. She's so cute and innocent as Sandy... except at the end and she's pretty great in that scene too. Stockard Channing is also really excellent too along with her Pink Ladies gang...

Lovingly put together. The tone is quite brilliantly gentle and charming - look at the coherence and high spirit Kleiser gets out of the dance contest sequence - a masterclass in crowd direction to rival Altman. The songs are mostly trashy genre pastiche, but in the film's retro context I fell for their innocence anyway. And Travolta is a God - so beautiful, so fun, such a great dancer!

Everytime I watch a musical, I wish that we could break into random dances to express the situation in the real life too, alas our reality is duller than that. Some of the choreographies in this one are simply breathtaking and Travolta is otherworldly as a dancer. It has great lines here and there too: "Men are amoeba on a flea on a rat".

I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, but jeez. Hokey in the worst way and bizarrely amoral, the film's sole exemplary trait is in its production design, creating a perfect vision of an imagined past. It also faces the greatest problem of any musical in that the songs fuckin' blow, and the pacing is stilted enough that whenever someone began singing, I thought, "oh, right, this is a musical." Boo.

The lasting image of this film for me is Newton-John vamped out, having decided that Travolta's Danny will never love her for who she is. So she gives up her identity (and presumably, her purity) to mollify a guy who only seems to have given up his bad guy image (notice how he tosses that sweater in the final number). Of course, maybe he really is a good guy, but then the movie is just a mess, her transformation completely unnecessary. The songs were fun enough, but that's about it.
