Theo Staats arrives at his uncle's rubber plantation in the then Dutch colony of Indonesia. He meets and falls in love with Ems, a beautiful Dutch Indonesian singer, The movie follows their story from the period of colonial power to the Japanese occupation during World War II and the following war of Independence.
