Ugh. Is there anything more irritating than someone who thinks he's really funny but actually isn't? Robin Williams sums up everything that's wrong with "zany" comedy.

The highlight first: Walsh was pure awesomeness incarnated. That he only got the chance to act for little over two decades was unfair - to him and to us. As for Williams, I dislike him as a comedian. I tend to agree with his douchy superior in this film that he simply isn't funny. He does, however, convince both in the radio studio as well as outside of it. Just underneath his obnoxious funny faces a tragic sadness at times becomes visible, a dichotomy that serves 'Good Morning, Vietnam' well.

Most of the time Robin Williams is plain annoying, it's just that he talks so fast that the occasional joke that's actually funny manages to color his flurry of words a moderately entertaining hue. I actually liked that maligned Hauk fellow with his Polka much better. He was the campy antithesis to the corniness of Williams and of the movie itself.

Robin William delivers the best performance of his early carrer. Robin shines as Adrian Cronower, giveing the performance both his manic humor and a dramtic depth. Bruno Kirby is spot on as Adrian's nemesis. And Forest Whitaker may very well be the next James Earl Jones.

If you have to see one Vietnam war film from 1987, do yourself and favor and watch "Full Metal Jacket". This obnoxious serio-comedy is just trying so hard to be funny (there's practically a zany one-liner per second) that it simply becomes annoying. Williams' character is totally unsympathetic, while the more "serious" parts are mostly hokey and sentimental. Sure, there are some chuckle-worthy bits and mildly touching moments but, on the whole, this is an irritating and boring film.

Half of the stuff Williams says that's supposed to be funny... isn't. And then it seems like halfway through shooting Levinson realized you can't have a pure comedy revolving around Vietnam war, so he threw in some ineffective, rushed drama. Still, you know, it wasn't... BAD.

Much of the 1980s existed in guilt and apologia for our second war against China in Vietnam, forgetting that it checked the Chinese advance by converting much of Southeast Asia to ceramic. This film tries to heal some wounds, ends up sappy, and is probably why Robin Williams an hero'd.

I expected the rambunctious rapid-fire radio comedy (even if I rarely got the jokes, the montages with the rocking 60s hits were excellent and the uptight Hauk an almost too-perfect adversary); what surprised me was its serious commentary on the Vietnam war, not just with the army censorship issue but with the conflict's effects on civilians as well (see the striking "What a Wonderful World" montage), though Aidan's womanizing got that off to a rough start and the Tuan twist is left unresolved.

My distant memory is that this was neither funny nor insightful, and in truth barely critical of the massive and systematic US slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people. I also have some recollection that the guy it is based on was actually a pretty horrible, conformist guy, so I guess that fits. It just isn't particularly admirable or interesting. Well, of semiotic interest, perhaps, but little else.

Really good performance by Robin Williams in prime form makes this very much worth watching, particularly for the devastatingly powerful scene in which he performs comedy for the soldiers. The biggest problem is the "big reveal" towards the end which is telegraphed an hour before it's revealed, and yet is treated as if it should be some big, movie-changing revelation.

A pure man against the institution film, with the institution getting the man temporarily taken off the air, before actually trying to make him a KIA statistic in a strangely aggressive twist. Whitaker was a likeable sidekick, while Williams' era comedy has aged but comes with an innocence that contrasts the setting.

The comedy can be hit or miss, but Williams is good enough of an actor to make you care for his character regardless. What hurts the film is the lackluster plot and generally schmaltzy way it goes about things, which the acting is not strong enough to overcome.

This is an ok movie that only maintains itself because of Robin Williams, not a very deep analysis about war and the Vietnam conflict, the Vietnam context serves better for Robin Williams humor than to see how awful war is. Nevertheless it's an entertaining movie.

Some good one-liners, and Robin Williams has a likable coke fueled charisma to his act that makes him refreshing in small doses, but the schmaltz here is way too on the nose for me to take anything seriously, and the comedy is too forced and unfunny for me to laugh.

I like Robin Williams. Even if his schtick wasn't always laugh-out-loud funny, his screen presence was consistently interesting and watchable. But this movie is built on it from the ground up, punctuated by periods of third-rate drama and a juvenile rebellion against authority that had to have been dated even at the time of its release. The film itself is also so devoid of anything visually engaging it might as well have been an audiobook. Avoid.

This is the quintessential Robin Williams performance. This is where he gets to show off everything that made him one of Hollywood's most beloved stars, from his rapid-fire wit (I once read something that compared his act to "a child flipping through the channels," a perfect description if you ask me) to his ability for these wonderfully tender moments that made him excel in films like Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society and this one.

It's like Robin Williams doing his stand up routine only cleaned up and Groucho Marx style--I hate Groucho Marx. Williams spins great comic moments that may have been scripted but likely were not as a man with no history and for whom everything is manic radio material.
