Horrible. A pastiche collage of contemporary whimsy under the guise of historical interest. It's just another underachieving, intelligence insulting melodrama that the world of film could really do without. Yann Tiersen was the final straw. (Watch The Lives of Others instead if you're interested in the subject matter.)

A decent enough film but for me the story background wasn't anything new so I was only mildly entertained. I wouldn't recommend it unless you don't know anything about the DDR and are curious about how life was behind the wall. It's a good film, it really is, with decent idea's, just didn't entertain me much and didn't learn me anything new.

Uninteresting and melodramatic. If you have to be intimately involved in something (in this case, German reunification) to "get" or enjoy a film about it, then the film has failed.

It is difficult to recall just how world shattering an event the fall of the Eastern Bloc was. The world changed, seemingly overnight, and this film beautifully summons up a wistful sense of dislocation as the somewhat innocent East Germans enter a new world of fast food joints, designer jeans and lava lamps.

Bearing in mind that the premise of deliberately gaslighting an otherwise cogent person "for their own good" is a pretty distasteful one for such a soft, sentimental film: this is a meandering, ultimately good natured effort which makes some interesting points on the vague and transient nature of political history, but is ultimately too contrived and hollow to score a direct hit - perhaps most interesting elements are the direct and indirect Kubrickian shout-outs from time to time.

Being a family drama/comedy, it's not exactly my favourite genre. I also feel it uncomfortable to smile or laugh at a family in distress. But the movie is original (East Germany setting, ta-daa!), witty, and the ending is truly rewarding.

A couple of scenes in this film really make you wonder whether the fall of the Berlin wall really was much of an improvement to some Eastern people, a thought often totally dismissed. The alternate history of the wallfall they make up for the mother is absolutely brilliant.

Well-written and well-acted, with a high quality soundtrack. Overall this film could have been tightened up a lot to bring the running time down to around 90 minutes, but at least there is a reasonably good amount of content here particularly for those who are unfamiliar with life in the GDR.

Expertly-blended mix of drama, comedy, satire, history and politics. Although the story and its characters are not that believable, it can teach us young ignorant folks a lot about how people felt living in Germany before and after the reunification. And after all the jokes are used up, the emotions do ring true, showing how well-balanced and nuanced Becker's script is. Enjoyable informative.

"Goodbye Lenin!" draws its power from the curious paradox that lies at its very heart: the idea, expressed with deep yearning, that the DDR was not grimly oppressive but was instead preferable to a modern, liberal world whose comforts are in comparison impersonal, global, hollow. The plot is almost inconsequential: it's the atmosphere that draws you in, the queasy feeling of a world changing instantaneously, irrevocably, and perhaps not for the better.
