Car theft in Long Beach went down 47% when Randall "Memphis" Raines walked away from the life. He gets dragged back into it by assuming the job his brother Kip screwed up for stolen-car broker Raymond Calitri: steal 50 exotic cars and have them on a container ship by 8 AM Friday morning, and he got this news on a Monday. With Calitri threatening to kill him and Kip, and the police GRAB unit breathing down his neck, Memphis reassembles his old crew and attempts to pull off the logistically impossible. (imdb)

Desperately aggro car heist flick with no style or intrigue, but worse, has no idea how to use Nic Cage. Put this 'Memphis Raines' character in the next Fast movie and let him chew!

Silly but enjoyable action flick has enough stupendously over-the-top action sequences (Cage on the bridge at the finale is swoon worthy!) to make up for occasional lulls in between times. A first rate-cast are not required to do much heavy lifting (one feels Duvall signed on for a bigger part), but all and sundry give themselves over to the overwrought style of the enterprise, especially Jolie whose sardonic demeanor is a perfect livener to her "eye candy" character.

I think it’s just too hard to make a movie specifically about stealing cars exciting. Other great movies involve stealing cars, but that’s not the main plot point. That being said, not everything was bad and I really liked Delroy Lindo.

Infinitely better than the original 1974 version. Yes, it's a brain-dead 90's action summer popcorn flick, but I found it highly entertaining. It's got great cars, exhilarating car chase sequences and some hilarious character moments. It's maybe even superior to most, if not all, the F&F movies -- partially because it actually places the spotlight on the cars and not on idiotic CGI "action" sequences.

For first 10-15 minutes this movie was very promising, then was introduced typical action movie elements: run against time and good guy forced to act bad. At the end movie didn't offer anything and was totally predictable. 2 stars out of 5

Pros include that amazing chase scene at the end, any scene with Vinnie Jones, and just seeing the camaraderie between these characters. Cons include a very unthought-out plot, ridiculous pacing, and the majority of the characters being obnoxiously one dimensional and often stereotypes. Cage plays his role too subdued, and Jolie doesn't need to be there at all. Overall, worth maybe one viewing.

Gone in 60 Seconds is an action film I've never particularly cared for. This one of those Jerry Bruckeimer productions that at the back of my mind I always assume is a Michael Bay film. I enjoyed several Nicolas Cage films in the 90's, but this was the first stinker from him that I can recall and the turn of the millennium hasn't treated him too well since. And with the exception of Robert Duvall, the supporting cast does nothing for me here. And even the novelty of the cars soon wares off too.

Gone in 60 Seconds is ultimately a feast for the eyes provided you turn off your brain before you sit down to watch it. Not to mention, you'll be surprised how hard it is not to challenge the chump in the car next to you to a little drag race on the ride home. unabashed Hollywood: Randall "Memphis" Raines (Cage), in order to convince a mean criminal to spare the life of his brother (Giovanni Ribisi), must BLOW UP 50 cars in the next 72 hours!

I'm fairly sure at this point this is one of those films I've seen the most, just because I will usually end up accidentally watching the whole thing if I happen to catch it on TV. There are no limits to the films the man Cage can elevate simply by his presence. Also, Jolie before she started taking her acting job seriously, and a pre-Deadwood Timothy Olyphant gig. I hesitate in calling this a guilty pleasure because no, I don't actually feel too guilty here. It's just good, stupid fun.

Gone in Sixty Seconds is such a dull action film. The chases are few and far between, and when they do show up, they're boring. They're technically competent but fail to get the heart pumping any harder than that of a comatose patient. You can't invest in any of the characters. The only one who's on-screen enough is the lead, but his character is established before the movie and doesn't change as it progresses. There's no reason to watch Gone in Sixty Seconds.

The story could have been decent, but the acting (or perhaps it's the writing), even when not downright silly, is still really mediocre and just all over the place quality-wise. The biggest problem though is that I hate basically everything about how it was directed...every choice of musical cue and close-up shot is made with the assumption that I'm an idiot and can't follow the story, think, or feel for myself--it's absolutely terrible.

As a potential starting point for a gigantic action/heist/car-movie franchise this feels more as a finished product than Fast and the Furious. But where FatF had a sort of amateurish unfinished charm, this just feels like a a hack job. The car chases are poorly executed and it seems like Nicolas Cage was only on coke for that one "...Let's ride!!" shot.

As an 18 year old on its release, I remember really enjoying this one. 16 years later and it's clear I was part of the target audience, lapping up the flash cars and fast-moving action, and ignoring the rather humdrum, formulaic plot and execution. It's still fun and holds up fine (even if the climactic jump scene looks even cheesier now than it did then) but is nothing special and just feels like an average cinema night out from the era. Which it is.

Cage may not have many expressions to show but he doesn't have to in this gritty car boosting film. It's not the actors that steal the show -- although they all do a fine job! -- but rather the action that we are presented with as the characters fulfil a necessary evil.

Hollywood imperialism in action: take a profitable little independent film, take it over, make it into a much bigger and even more profitable studio film. Thinking big passes as imagination nowadays. Countless car wrecks will be accommodated, but the hero's good-guy status must not be jeopardized by any innocent casualties -- even when a pursuing cop car gets knocked through a concrete wall by a wrecking ball.
