Very distracting embarrasingly amateurish soundtrack that i remarked on was made by the director himself, and actually was. Leave it to the pro's, even if you have a low budget.

It's been a few years but I probably liked this more than Mystery Road. Pedersen has a lot of charisma (he looks great aiming a rifle!), and the villains are memorably diabolical. Capital's disregard for personhood and suffering is depicted in realistic, non-euphemistic (though very PG-13) terms. The music lays it on a little thick at times, something I don't recall being an issue with Mystery Road.

the occasionally great photography and coen'esque grittiness are held back by overall mediocre acting and some weird editing choices. often the ambient score tries to create more profoundness than actually is at hand, but the premise still is an interesting one. credit is due for filmmakers going into this direction rather than trying to please the dull cravings of the smartphone generation. plus, i loved the outback ever since i set foot in it.

Not bad, but I didn't like it quite as much as its predecessor, Mystery Road. There is probably more interesting character work spread out here, but I don't think it works as well as either a western or thriller, and I think the score detracts from it significantly. I can't put my finger on why but it just doesn't seem to match the film's content.

Appropriately bone-chilling western noir.

Way better than the first one; it loses the Australian idiosyncrasy in favor of a more regular Thriller.

Confused mess of a film can't decide where its heart lies -- as a study/mystery of small-town corruption, it pulls its punches by revealing the key villains far too early (though it's not that great of a mystery!) and as a study of race relations, it can never tie together its competing threads of Asian people trafficking and 'whitefella vs blackfella', giving both sides short shrift. Cinematography is breathtaking, though odd, clipped editing makes the flow of some scenes disorienting.

Apparently, it's a sequel of sorts but you don't have to know that. It's a film that has really good elements; particularly with some really picturesque scenes and great camera work, only downsides are the lacklustre performances and some editing issues. The plot also doesn't seem to be connected well enough, but still, it has a good gritty feel to it and it's pretty enjoyable.

A return of the Jay Swan character from Mystery Road, although seeing the previous movie isn't necessary. It plays as a modern cowboy outback Australia film. It's got some good actors on hand and that helps overcome some cliche dialogue. The aerial shots (drone?) I found very enjoyable, along with nearly every shot of the outback. Unfortunately it could have been edited a bit tighter pre production to cut the scene repetition down a bit. Worth a crack if you want an Australian western feel.
