Golden Swallow is living peacefully with her "friend" by a waterfall. She has seemingly given up her death-dealing ways but soon she is accused of going on a bloody rampage against an evil clan. As it turns out, the actual culprit is an old beau named Silver Roc who is impersonating her to draw her out into the open. A complicated love triangle develops as her affections are torn between the two men while all three must also deal with the evil kung-fu clan. (imdb)

Chang Cheh has a breathtaking eye for on-location cinematography, which only makes it all the more jarring when he switches mid-scene to those fake sound stages. I didn't think his experiment with selectively-obscured frames ultimately worked either. This film has well-done fight scenes and characterization typical of Chang Cheh, and it serves as an intriguing parable about capital punishment, but overlength and a relatively torpid second act seriously hurt it.

great movie but it's fucked up to name it after cheng pei-pei's character while keeping her out of all the big fights

Love triangle while GS is lured to SR as he lives in brothels and kills dozens of bandits and leaves golden swallow near them. Wants to avenge dead family against Shengs and Golden Dragon. Unlike Come, frenzy and brutal, camera sweeps through action between wide angles and fast zoom-ins and travelling shots - longer, but faster. Coup de grace in the final duel against Whip, stairs and woods corridor killings, massacre at GD fortress, sacrifices (kid and man killing themselves to prove a point).

The acting is quite good for the most part and the story is well written. The cinematography and landscapes are gorgeous. The biggest downside here is the fight scenes, Yu Wang is not a martial artist and they have to resort to camera tricks to try and hide that, additionally the fight choreography isn't up to par with most of the films from Shaw Brothers and Cheh Chang. Also Lieh Lo is severely underutilized.

incredibly violent, and one of the most genuinely thrilling kung fu flicks i've ever seen. cheh chang makes wonderful use of landscapes, and experiments with different angles and camerawork for the action scenes. the experiments don't work half the time(but only in rare cases do they actually detract from the action by failing), but it's a triumph the moments when they do.

Probably the most mature kung fu film of it's era. Pei-Pei Cheng proves she can carry a narrative without being the central figure, and shows off her subtle acting chops.
