Golden Exits

...and not a single character got peed on!

I love good dialogue drama, but this is why so many people avoid it. It's a boring contemplation of navels, by people without a life compass or any idea what fulfillment is. Though one character surprisingly gets his stuff together, overall it's not a spoiler to say that the last line of the movie is a fitting epitaph for the rest of them--"Is that all there is?"

A slow burn of stylized, low-key Woody Allen ennui. Beautiful score, warm cinematography, and nothing really happens (but then that's the point).

sunnily oblivious to its inhabitants' troubles, this brooklyn is a purgatory with no potential for transcending cycles of disconnection, monotony, mediocrity and death. along comes the exasperatingly elusive browning, a tantalising exit just out of reach like the plane in the opening shot. while he sympathises with the brutal, immutable malaise, perry maintains enough critical distance in archiving this dearth of courage, integrity or self-awareness that the dreaded bourgy pity party is avoided.

Feels very much like Perry's best shot at actually BEING Woody Allen. Not un-enjoyable, but even at its apex(es) it's not exactly what I would describe as an entertaining film. I'm fine with heavy dialogue (though hit-and-miss here in terms of quality), but I do prefer that dialogue to come from characters whose inter-relationships intrigue me. To me this is a group of unlikable, pretentious, melodramatic people. That just doesn't hook me, intentional or not. It's more annoying than investing.

3 extra points to this film - which is about purgatory? I'm not sure - because Ad-Rock from fuckin' Beastie Boys snuck in some good acting chops. Otherwise it's a total waste of 16mm film
