A new priest shows up at the parish of a crusty old priest named Father Fitzgibbon. The new man, Father O'Malley, must ingratiate himself with both the old man and his congregation. Starts off as a strong story about a progressive priest, but the plotline about selling a song is unbearably silly and most of the music is bland and dated.

I liked Bing Crosby. He seems like a nice guy. And he can sing. I don't, however, like musicals and I don't like sentimentality. Even looking beyond those elements, the story of clashing approaches could have been handled with more finesse and accentuation. Perfectly harmless and watchable... and, ehm, that's it.

A meandering but charming vehicle for Bing Crosby.

It's so narratively breezy and low stakes that it's difficult to give a damn for what feels like double the runtime. Musically it's bland, acting-wise it's bland, and even in its doses of morality it's bland. It has little to say. It's really just a comforting pat on the back for a traumatized war-torn world.

The movie has technical flaws (characters, situations, what happens/what is said, not rarely are not realistic at all; the episodic format sometimes work, but other moments make it too fragmented; the direction has bad moments). The great quality of the movie is showing someone that deals with other people without trying to change them, facing difficult situations. The development of the narrative gives great depth to the social interactions. The priests: a "progressive", a rigid; very unfair

Perhaps more than other this is a film of its time. It features wives getting jobs, husbands going to war, immigrant children integrating into the community, social values progressing, and most importantly, has an easy-going pace that reminded a world torn apart by war and genocide, that small acts of kindness and compassion could still make a difference in the world. 1944 needed this film, and it never would've been as hugely successful as it was if it had come out at literally any other time.

Felt like they could have done everything better, but this was a warm and well-meaning film with Bing Crosby's mellow mood in the center of things. So likable that he won his only Oscar for his role. Going My Way won an additional 6 Oscars, including Best Picture. Not agreeing with that, but I guess it served it purpose with it's story of helping each other when in trouble, which was perhaps the mood needed for those final war years. Still, even if not one of 1944's best, it's a nice picture.

Liked this more than I thought I would. The beginning was rather dull. The more opera-style singing wasn't a hit for me; I preferred Crosby's version of the title song.

Kind of hilariously dated, I do like Bing Crosby. This is just such a standard forties film that it just doesn't feel like a Best Picture-worthy winner, regardless of year.

So very bland and sentimental. But it's nice to be able to see (and hear) the great, charismatic Metropolitan Opera star Risë Stevens in her prime as the... wait for it... opera star, Genevieve Linden. (Did the writers HAVE to give her a character a name almost identical to the most famous opera singer of all time? I suppose they did, since that's the level of obviousness at which this flick works.)

So-so story with a good performance by Crosby. There are some okay musical numbers. This isn't a classic (to me), but you could do worse.

One of the less interesting of McCarey's movies, nobody stands out and it's all a bit lackluster. I can appreciate the broad strokes of the story, but it's pieced together in a mostly boring manner.

Not my favorite Bing Crosby movie, but charming none the less. I was put off a bit by some of the actors, most notably the kids, but it seems over acting was the way you did it then.

"You throw like an atheist," that's when I should have known I was in for a garbage film. To be fair, while it doesn't hide its religiousness, it's not that preachy but it's so ridiculously dated and corny that it gets grating. This stands out more due to the fact that its central themes are about moving with the times and the contrast between the young "progressive" O'Malley and set in his ways Fitzgibbon. They all look out of step now. And while Crosby is charming Fitzgerald is annoying.

For Catholics only. I find Barry Fitzgerald's performance more irritating every time I see it.
