An expensive, but dull, remake of the first Godzilla movie, in which the monster is a baddie; unlike the Japanese original, the lizard king is here created by computer graphics; it is the remainder of the cast who seem to be played by men in rubber suits.

Big and stupid. No I’m not describing Godzilla 1998 I’m describing me clicking play on this knowing what was ahead. If you have to hide everything in your movie with rain maybe you shouldn’t make the movie. I’d still take big bad stupid 90s blockbusters over today’s almost every single time. Introducing Broderick driving like an idiot was too bold, but luckily there were no mothers with their daughters for him to obliterate.

I took two things away from this movie, That the French are bad for creating Godzilla and that the American military would have a hard time finding Godzilla and his kaiju-fascist nest hiding in the hills of Manhatten. And boredom. Three things! And a low groaning noise. Four things!

90's remake fodder with no redeeming value. Please note: If you do a big budget monster movie then for fuck's sake invest some of that budget into CGI effects and not shit promo music videos by one hit wonders. They would have been better off having Broderick jam his hand up the ass of a Godzilla puppet with action scenes comprised of matchbox cars and toy soldiers in front of a green screen. Emmerich didn't do jack shit with Jean Reno either. This is total ass and Emmerich sucks a fat cock.

Has the distinction not only of foreshadowing major destruction in New York City, but of depicting the response of the French state apparatus as more rational than the American. The fact the commercial and critical success of this movie was not greater than what it was is wholly attributable to this decision. And to the fact that the plot depends on celebrating the extermination of an endangered species, and the murder of two hundred baby animals along with it. Not too bad as a kids' movie.

It's classically captivating pre-monster when you're wondering with fear and awe along with the science/military team what could've caused this destruction; this period doesn't last long, unfortunately, shifting to a barrage of mostly tiresome action sequences that are overcome in no way by the dumb plot (why didn't they just blow it up with missiles in the first place?), cringe-worthy character work (Pitillo puts in a poor performance), and bland one-liners ("Running would be a good idea").

Half the cast are Simpsons regulars. If they'd gone all out and actually had this animated as a Simpsons movie, it would still have been a lot dumber than your average 90s Simpsons episode, but at least we would have gotten a scene of Homer bashing Godzilla over the head screaming "WHY... WON'T... YOU... DIE?" The fact that we don't even get this makes me dislike the movie even more.

Horrible idiotic film, I didn't care if the city was destroyed or not, in fact I would've liked to see them get destroyed and Godzilla die of natural causes. Worst of all it leaves an "open end"... the "giant" iguanas from the original flash gordon serials have more of the true spirit of godzilla than this movie. putting that aside, and imagining this movie is titled "Iguana", it's still a terrible film overstuffed with moments stolen from jurassic park and irritating 90s references and jokes. i tried desperately to look past all of that and just enjoy a giant...whatever...stomping through new york...but even those scenes aren't thrilling.

This was pretty awesome when I was a member of its target demographic: 11-year-old boys. Seeing it now only reminds me what an idiot I was when I was 11 years old. That, and what an idiot Roland Emmerich was when he was 43 years old. Luckily one of us has gotten smarter since then. But I will say this: Mayor Ebert, a dead-ringer for Roger who even flashes the trade-mark thumbs, gave me a chuckle. That's about all that I can commend, from memory. The rest is...well, the less said the better.

So remember the big fuss at keeping the giant lizard secret until its release? Now it's in a Dorito's commercial. And so it is with another Emmerich destructo-porn. At this rate I'm hoping for an ID4 alien guzzling Diet Pepsi for an unsuspecting public (with or without Janet Jackson is my only unknown). But seriously. Revisiting this childhood obsession of mine (given how much the trailer alone terrified me), I suppose it's unsurprising to find this is bad. The good and bad of such a film is the exact same as other Roland Emmerich joints: the opening 30 mins of tension-setting is fine enough, then the destruction parts are fun and well designed. But then there's the second half of the film, a totally dead and boring slog to survive through, this time with scenes derivative from Jurassic Park that are unfun.

A work of deep Hollywood hubris, narratively shapeless, not really caring about Godzilla as a concept and vaguely embarassed about being asked to, ending up as a weird mashup of a disaster movie, Jurassic Park, and some military-action thing, with an even broader cast of flat stereotypes than Independence Day. I honestly quite like this version of Godzilla, as an idea - focused on stealth and dexterity and posing a broader existential threat than most. But the movie, as a movie, Does Not Work.

I used to love it as a kid, but as an adult, one sees the issues with the movie. To begin with, I am not a godzilla fan, but this was not a godzilla movie. It was a Jurassic Park inspired adventure movie (the baby zillas being clear raptors rip-off) with heavy American flair and puzzling use of humour. The blue hues and Burton-esque music showed the movie's age and seemed unfitting for a story of a murderous attack. They focus too much on the kid-movie personality humans

Was subpar when it came out and the special effects definitely haven't aged will. If you look at it as not really a Godzilla movie more of a giant creature in NYC movie the "Ninja" giant monster itself is okay. However it gets dragged down by the poor acting, annoying characters (Except Jean Reno's), and clear attempts to ripoff the Jurassic Park's velociraptors. The best thing to come from this movie is the animated series or the scene where TOHO had Godzilla destroy "Zilla" in Final Wars.

Starts well, with a nice balance of Emmerich's signature heavy handed silliness matched against a convincing evocation of the monster via late 90s CGI. Becomes progressively more numbing once the "INDEPENDENCE DAY but with GODZILLA" premise is established, with much chaotic action but little coherence; just as things appear to be wrapping up, it becomes "GODZILLA – THE NEXT GENERATION"! Broderick, Azaria and Reno are all fine, but none of the rest of the cast really stick in the memory.

From a personal level, Godzilla is a campy and enjoyable nostalgic gem. However from a critical standpoint. The performances are awkward. Godzilla falls into Hollywood producers hands and given to directer Roland Emmerich to follow up his 50s alien B-movie homage "Independence Day"(1996). Where Mathew Broderick, a biologist is brought into the military's efforts to stop the gigantic mutated CGI monstrosity. A monster movie filled with nothing but comedic relief as the cast of "The Simpsons" takes on not "Jurassic Park" rip-off CGI velociraptors. Similar to "Batman & Robin"(1997) level of stinky cheese to an iconic character.

Is it transphobic to think that when they learned that the creature was pregnant, they should have stopped referring to it as he? Yeah, that's the kind of thoughts that occupied my mind while watching this. Effects that were bad, but not bad enough to be laughable. Awful plot, characters, acting and dialogue. Although for some reason I really liked Sergeant O'Neal. He constantly had that look of "I'm guarding a pile of fish. Look at my life. Look at my choices." and he was really believable.

While it is a very mediocre blockbuster, it was not as horrible as its reputation makes it seems to be. Sure there is a lot lacking in the execution, it's has too many characters, its completely tone deaf and the building of suspense is absent, Pus a lot of ideas are tremendously stupid: most of all the eggs and baby-'zilla's whom only seem to be in the movie to cash-in on the raptors success from Jurassic Park. But the action scenes are exciting and spectacular, which is what counts most.

Gets far more hate than it deserves. This is a funny, well-paced and enjoyable action film with romance on the side. It has a bunch of likable, distinct characters that compliment the locations. Slick in execution and does not assume the audience is brain-dead. Tonally it is too erratic and some scenes drag. Despite these issues, it is not afraid to have fun while Godzilla decimates the city of New York.

Bad blockbusters tend to have farcical elements, but this one goes all the way. It's a comedy through and through, but one peppered with jokes that aren't funny, characters who aren't appealing and a giant lizard that isn't even fun to laugh at. It also just flat-out refuses to end. I saw the Rifftrax version, and even though I don't find them remotely funny, I couldn't help but be grateful to hear them. A score of 5 for this is probably too generous.

Godzilla is possibly the worst Hollywood adaption and wastes of potential I can recall. From the bizarre casting, to the awfully dated CG, to the completely dumb and nonsensical plot. This is a complete disaster. A film like this should be built on suspense and the reveals should simmer. But every element is so poorly executed. It's easy to compare this to Jurassic Park but considering this was made 5 years later, there's no excuses for the poor standard of CG and what's expected. Truly awful.

The main issues with this film are that the monster's reveal is ruined by shitty CGI (they have no excuse here, this was made 5 years after Jurassic Park), the military operation was one of the most incompetent ever run (oh damn, shot down the Chrysler building), and it was long enough to become boring (not something that should happen with a giant monster action movie).
