The second best 'Godzilla' movie. Its strength lies in approaching the material as part war movie part family drama, but the monster itself is no match for 'Shin Godzilla'. (I wonder if my job as Criticker police is costing me acclaim. I want to write more but must spend my time chasing my SLACKER friend, who will happily blame small children for skipping reviews. It is an ungrateful job, but someone has to do it. I am. The Law.)

Godzilla done right. (I'm wondering what is harming the quality of my reviews more, the fact that I'm now a father of two which, of course, means that I have significantly less time on my hands or my friend who, bless him, always impersonates a Criticker police officer whenever I try to sneak in a rating without a review to accompany it. But hey, who really cares about serious criticism when I can produce meaningless nonsense like this in a fraction of the time?)

Probably the most overhyped film of the year. Maybe it’s culture-specific but every actor just hams it up to the point it loses its appeal and it ends on the most soap-opera bullshit ending that makes any Hallmark Christmas movie look like a less shitty Hallmark Christmas movie. Considering the merely 15M$ this was made for, however, it looked pretty good.

Thanks to my local theater for telling me about this. It's amazing how this film's $15 million budget outshines the Hollywood versions costing 10x. It's good to go back to the roots of Godzilla being an atomic bomb metaphor for Japan. War and veterans are at the forefront, but this is not a film glorifying Imperial (or postwar) Japan. I liked the human relationships. Child actors could always be better. Ending was literally telegraphed. Fav scene: Godzilla chasing their tiny boat was hilarious.

The first time we see Godzilla deploy atomic breath is hands down the most visceral cinematic monster moment ever put to film. The wind up is slow and epic, and then the actual blast and resulting damage is massively catastrophic. The music is phenomenal, they brought back the OG theme. That low brass duh-duh-duh-dun is so cool. The human drama dragged a little in certain places, but by the ending hospital scene I had totally bought into the melodrama.

Any movie that gives me several handmade visual demonstrations on how to defeat a monster is an instant win. I am also a sucker for melodrama. Overall, a solid entry into the Japanese Godzilla series. The WW2 setting was a nice twist. It was really interesting seeing the struggles of the post-war slums.

You know... it's easy to forget in the early going that this is a Godzilla movie. You kinda get roped in by this investment-worthy Japanese domestic historical fiction about the rebuilding of a life post-war. And then it's like "oh shit wait this is a Godzilla movie", and it's SUCH a great Godzilla movie on top of that. The iconic train scene, the scale and design of the monster (and the destruction), everything. And watching it in black & white lends it an added layer that was worth the wait.

The time period and human drama worth investing in both work to make the threat caused by 'Zilla more impactful. I did chuckle at one character surviving a situation that they really shouldn't have, but maybe some rays of hope in the wake of all that mindless destruction are worth something too. Makes all the recent US versions look even more lame in comparison. My body is ready for a Godzilla Zero. And the 'in space' sequel Godzilla Infinity Plus One.

It truly is probably the best Godzilla film ever, bringing in all the series's themes. It's certainly the least campy. It's also a timely reminder of how powerful a simple human drama with good characters and a good plot can be, what Hollywood once excelled at, and the exact opposite of the Marvel school of filmmaking that has razed cinema for more than a decade.

No time to grief in post-WWII Japan. War ended in a tragic note, and Gojira starts eating and stomping people to provoke yet another collective trauma. So, it takes a collectivity of common folks -- because they can't trust Japanese or American government to do anything for them -- to organize a party to try and defeat Gojira, but our main hero, a former kamikaze pilot who saw the monster killing jet mechanics and just couldn't do anything to help, is the one to take this mission personally.

God bless this movie and its big, corny heart. The sociopolitical commentary lumbers on, subtle as a giant mutant lizard—PTSD, survivor’s guilt, institutional betrayal and individual resilience. It mostly serves to amplify the human drama around the kaiju carnage, which is unapologetically filtered through the lens of painful postwar history. But ultimately, it’s polished crowd-pleasing nostalgia bait, which has its own comforting charms.

It has a great story to go along with the Godzilla mayhem and it’s paced pretty well. I thought there were a couple scenes with overacting, but it was good for the most part. The small crew he becomes a part of has a really great dynamic. The ending is very telegraphed, but I really enjoyed just about every moment of this.

Aside from one or two moments of forced humor and sappiness, this movie is damn near perfect. It's unique to see a story of this caliber in a kaiju movie, but thematically and historically it is absolutely perfect for Godzilla. In addition to a mesmerizing and cathartic story, the CGI is beyond impressive, with Japan proving that they truly can outdo the US in every aspect when it comes to this iconic monster. I'd dare say it's the best film in the franchise, second only to the original Gojira.

By default this is already better than what we’ve been getting with the MonsterVerse movies. It does start to drag a little right before we get to the climax, but it’s otherwise paced well enough. The score is spot on, and the effects (CGI tanks aside) are unbelievably good for its budget, somehow looking better than many recent blockbusters. All of the Godzilla scenes are good, but I’ve gotta give credit to the opening scene for really setting the stage for the rest of the film.

Yamazaki leans heavily into the melodrama for Godzilla Minus One, giving the film a live-action anime feel at times. Aesthetically, the film looks good (and I'm ordinarily not a fan of period pieces) especially considering the budget. The more serious tonal approach is a refreshing contrast from the American films, though I mostly like those as they are. The PTSD & post-war Japan were handled alright, but the nationalistic private industry push felt lame. Yoshioka was great. Kamiki less so.

A nice enough Gojira elevated by the 2023-4 masses and populists; its claim to history will probably be as the most head-scratching, undeserving winner of visual effects Oscar ever. Was that racist? Classist? Most midbudget stuff made today have better effects, even on TV. Sorry. Otherwise it's a case where the sum is somehow bigger than the parts, since the melodrama is dumb, if well delivered, and there's not nearly enough action scenes.

Toho didn't waste the 70th anniversary of Godzilla. Where the American franchise just keeps getting bigger, where Godzilla and Shin Godzilla showed a government and military struggling to cope, in 1947 there is none. Just people trying to band together against a threat. Godzilla here is a force of nature, mean, gritty, untouchable. Is the melodrama a little thick? I don't care. They crank the old Godzilla theme as people charge him in dilapitated fishing boats because that's all they have.

The post WW2 setting is great, the melodrama works quite well and they nail the tone, but… the monster rampage is a bit underwhelming, with an undercurrent of "You know how it is, so no need wasting time on setups or exposition", and it doesn’t stick the landing (no joke intended).with an absolutely ridiculous final surprise (the hospital scene), resulting in more laughs than I suspect was intended. Defiantly more charming than the US counterparts, though.

This was made with all the confidence of Godzilla's bulging chest and all the vulnerability of tiny Akiko's mumbled "Chichi," and every beat of it strikes with the power of a heat ray. An incredible postwar reflection, found family drama, monster film, and, especially, exploration of trauma. A stunning picture. Excellently written, shot, and scored.

It's still just a Godzilla movie, with blatant cinema flaws at that, even if the reception would have you believe otherwise. Soundtrack is nice, sure. Unless the concept of Godzilla and unearned violence excites you, you will be dying to leave the theatre. Of my group of 5, everyone hated it to the point it has become a night to remember. Overwhelming positive reception is definitely being driven by selection bias. There's just no way.....

Perhaps suffers a bit from watching this mere hours after my first viewing of Shin Godzilla, a film that is far more in my wheelhouse along with being more audacious on both a stylistic and thematic level. Nonetheless, this delivers exactly what you'd hope for (very good, if maybe not quite great, Godzilla carnage) and slightly over-delivers in other areas (namely the actual human drama which is far better accomplished here than in most films of this ilk, Godzilla-related or otherwise).

This is an Asian disaster/monster film, which initially seems like a 'regular' b movie but by the end, I admit there's some semi impressive visual effects and CGI and there's definitely a fair bit of tension and action. Impressively mounted entry in this stalwart series can’t quite match the artistry (or impact) of the concurrent U.S. Monsters trilogy, but gives it a red-hot go – a thinness to the human stories contribute to a sluggish first act, but once the titular star moves centre stage, it’s dynamite – a huge scale rock em sock em, with a cast of actors that it’s easy to root for, even papering over the key moment in the final battle being a bit of an emotional cheat. Hard to carp too much!

Godzilla Minus One is a quasi-re-imagining of the 1954 film which kicked off the franchise. It's got some solid performances, looks good (and on a modest budget), and is better than the recent American outings. But since it is a quasi-re-imagining, the themes it borrows from the original are only used half as well and the new themes don't feel fully-formed at best and totally historically revisionist (and completely tone-deaf) at worst.

I am giving the movie a bonus for how great the human scenes look. I'm so used to blue and yellow filters that it was refreshing to see the set design wonderfully varied in color and not washed out. The Godzilla CGI was great given their budget, but makes me fear they were overworked. I still think Godzilla looked silly at times, Japan hasn't perfected it yet. The ending was a bit contrived, and I wish the mechanic had tricked the pilot into saving himself.

Remake of SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO, again orchestrating a do-over of the Second World War such that Japan is no longer the aggressor. As before, Yamazaki recuperates kamikaze sacrifice but adds a critique of its death-driven ideology. Almost 80 years later, the appetite for these cinematic rituals, aimed at finally being able to say “la guerre est finie” (but, as mentioned, by fantasising all kinds of new wars to be won), appears unabated. Still, it’s more successful than the earlier mishmash.

A nearly perfect homage to everything good about Godzilla and what has come before, Minus One is a story told to near perfection. Unlike some Godzilla movies, they manage to near perfectly mix the destruction and action of the monster with the humanity of those fighting him. The soundtrack is the perfect level of classic music and epic moments. Minus One sadly does lose a level of its impact by compromising it slightly towards the end. But that one misstep only takes down a notch below perfect.

Thematically resonant of Bruce Willis' Armageddon. This is the best looking Gojira monster yet. Godzilla is usually seen as modern myth for a whole people, but this story focuses very much on the personal life of one individual, and this storyline is the main focus of the film, which can give an offbeat pace but it pays off, with Godzilla this time symbolising man's lingering inner demons.

I'm guessing this isn't exactly what Godzilla diehards want from a Godzilla movie, but FINALLY! A solo Godzilla movie that lives up to all the praise I'd been hearing. Not just a great Godzilla movie, but a great movie, full-stop. It accomplishes this by essentially making Godzilla a metaphor for fate/doom & creating characters that we actually care about! (unlike the wildly overrated 2014 & Shin versions) AND not cutting away from Godzilla just when he's about to destroy (again, unlike 2014).

Some cgi is off but that because of a smaller budget but the original story and acting makes you forget all about it. The human side story is emotional and touching and real and makes you feel more emotion for when godzilla strikes again. My only quip is the ending which should be more historical.

Godzilla's return to Japan in Shin Godzilla was a return to his being more natural disaster than animal, only now as a reaction to the Fukishima Disaster and the bureacratic failings of the event instead of the bomb. Minus One goes even more directly to Godzilla's roots as a great remix of the 1954 original. Here the big lizard is not just a force against humanity but a force against one human in particular, with Godzilla being something akin to our main character's great white whale.

This was heading toward even better territory, but the ending is hilariously eyerollingly bad and knocks it down a fair amount. A totally unforced Hollywood-style error even though it's not a Hollywood movie. So much of it is so good, though.

Wasn’t expecting to enjoy this anywhere near as much as I did! Great spectacle and destruction (especially for the budget, super impressive) but also a powerful human story about reckoning with the trauma of war and survivor’s guilt with several well-drawn characters.

Really, really good. Characters I care about and a terrifying monster and a compelling drama in post war Japan and a great score and and and... It's terrific.
