A modern-day version of the gospels, opening with John the Baptist calling a disparate group of young New Yorkers from their workaday lives to follow and learn from Jesus. They form a roving acting troupe that enacts the parables through song and dance, comedy, and mime. Jesus' ministry ends with a last supper, his Crucifixion in a junkyard, and, the following morning, his body being carried aloft by his apostles back into the world of the living on the streets of New York. It's like Jesus Christ Superstar with evangelical hippies. A vision of the apocalypse indeed.

I think if I had been more familiar with some of the songs I may have liked it more. Other than that, I think it was just too 70s for my tastes.

I really like the musical by Stephen Schwartz - the songs are great, and put together, they make for enough of a cohesive narrative for the stage. The film version is... painful.

Aside from having some of the catchiest songs ur ever likely 2 hear, there's nothing else 2 recommend this adaptation 2 any1 over the age of 8. A manic group of child-like adults may amuse on a stage, but on film they need somebody "normal" 2 bounce off of. But the movie insanely chooses 2 empty every single NYC location of its population, making any adult viewer feel like he's watching a very religious episode of Sesame Street. The narrative itself is equally barren: parables told, never shown.

I liked the music, but some of the stories are a bit inaccurate. Overall quite good.

David Greene somehow took an unfilmable off-Broadway musical and refashioned it into something wholly cinematic. It's SO not about religion; rather, it's about the ways in which old stories can be made new, about the creation of a family, and much more. A great personality test, too!
