Girls in Uniform

Despite being apparently toned down from the novel and the play, this film is quite overt in its lesbian themes. But this isn't merely a story of budding young passions... it also has a strong anti-fascist message, one which the Nazis would try to suppress. Although there's a little too much good guy/bad guy for my tastes, it does make an effective statement. And it's an artful film. Not quite expressionist, but very expressive in its camera language. An intriguing bit of cinematic history.

Manuelaaaaaaaa. It's a shame this film's claim to fame is the lesbian subtext, because it's not as important as the commentary on adolescent emotions. It's a plea for the fair treatment of teenagers not as adults but as future adults and makes a strong argument that emotional support is just as important as discipline.

Germany between the wars

Super risque for the time drama about a girl at an all-girls boarding school who falls in love with one of her (female) teachers. It's pretty decent, but I found it mostly interesting for the historical context and content. As a film, though, it certainly has moments.

Queer love as a deliberate act of defiance and resistance against fascism. Compassion as a salve to militarism. It shouldn't be surprising that a Jewish Lesbian in 1931 made one of the most radical critiques of fascism in cinema, and it's aided by some solid performances and camerawork evocative of German expressionism.

A landmark early queer drama which still packs a punch, and whose influence can still be seen today. The crummy girls’ school which the film never leaves is a dark and even sinister place, all shadowy corners and prowling camera and closeups on silent faces, frequently reminding one of German expressionist movies. While the plot is not unpredictable, the performances are very good, most notably Wieck as the kindly school mistress and object of infatuation for her charges.

long before the phrase "girls in uniform" became a signifier of schoolgirl pedoporn, this lesbian and antifascist film by leontine sagan (and carl froelich) was released in a country of surging nazism. the overt homosexuality and difficult sexual politics combined with the primitive early-sound aesthetic is almost surreal. it is at once sweet, gentle and emotionally draining, and is fundamentally an affirmation of individuality, friendship and love.

Angela Merkel plays in here

Long before the boys got their movies about 'special friendships" there was Mädchen in Uniform, in which the love is explicit but what one does with it was not. Still, a touching, anti-authoritarian love story, expressively shot, briskly and sincerely told.

A very sensual movie with a lot of sexual tension at an all girls school. Not graphic of course, but still very surprising at it's direct and open adaptation towards lesbian emotions. A well chosen cast portraying their roles to impressively. A real gem of a movie.

An interesting watch, and not only for the lesbian subtext. It's a fairly good film about growing up in an oppressive environment with a very likable all-girl cast.
