Movie 2100. The "Diamonds" scene is such a glorious exploration of friendship and the communal powers of pop music; the smile on my face was so wide in those 4 minutes that it nearly made up for the rest of the film's clunky, uneven attempt at capturing a girl's corrupted coming of age.

YTS.

I try to watch movies that are usually not my thing and Girlhood was one of those films. The beginning is tricky to get through with the giggling girls and teenage stuff happening, but it grows more serious and probes deeper once it gets going. The movie looks beautiful and works the colors in a gorgeous way, so it's very pleasant to watch at all times. The ending was somewhat unsatisfying, though.

There were nice feminist themes, but episodes did not always connected with each others.

Uneven but mostly Very Good social realism that approaches the complex racial & sexual politics having long belaboured France from an energetic, honest position.

Another strong female coming-of-age tale from Sciamma, who has established herself as one of the most important woman directors around. The first half of the film is close to perfect. Anchored by the fine performance of Karidja Touré, it encompasses a wide range of themes and emotions. Plenty of scenes fizz with energy, not just the fights. The film then turns on its head and delivers a weaker second half. A shame not to have gone from start to finish, but a very watchable film nonetheless.

The story has been told before and will be told again, because it's not like it doesn't keep playing out in real life. But there's a raw energy to Sciamma and her (apparently mostly amateur) actors that makes the movie burn even when it treads familiar ground.

I had two things going against me for this movie - a) I don't understand French and had to rely on subtitles. b) I am a guy. I found this to be a depressing kind of chick-flick. One of those "artsy" movies that are for critics and not the general audience.

Well acted & shot, and not without its moments, but filled with characters I neither liked nor cared about. Third act was a chore.

There's enough pieces here to make an interesting film, but not in the way that they are currently arranged.

A decent tale of the life a poor, black, French girl. The first part is slow, and it's a bit rough to sit through the gang's girly giggles and partying. Later, it takes a few okay turns, but overall it's a markedly weaker film than the director's two previous coming of age stories. And the score was, I found, torture.
