An inspired mystery-drama with a deceptively simple, yet completely unexpected and eerily resonant conclusion. The best introduction to Hasse Ekman.

Would have been more of a mystery if someone hadn't added it to the Lesbian collection.

Good characterisation makes this a fairly subtle and interesting exploration of the psychology of a troubled young woman. It is also a kind of reckoning with the moral culpability of some Swedes who in one way or another supported or collaborated with Nazism. It was not difficult to guess the “twist”, but perhaps that’s easy to say watching almost three quarters of a century after release, and the fact is that it’s impossible to imagine a film like this coming out of Hollywood at the time.

There's definitely an appeal here, but perhaps some of the exotic Swedish feel is lost on a neighbor like me. Regardless, it's a dark and mundane look back at a tragic girl who have killed herself. It's not presented as something sensational, but it gives you little hints of her life to keep you intrigued within the toned down nature Hasse Ekman composed it. I have a feeling this is one where you notice the nuances better for each time you see it.

Estreava há 70 anos na Suécia. Acho que esse é um dos mais ressonantes filmes sobre egomania masculina e de como homens não compreendem as mulheres em absoluto que já assisti. De lavar a alma. Youtube ( https://youtu.be/Kq4LLnjckcA )

Every noir needs at least one murder; when the death is a suicide, it opens up the story to see every little cut, especially when Ekman has no interest in keeping up the charade of niceties.
