Girl Asleep

It started out cute and awkward but took a left turn into annoying surrealism. It slightly recovered after that. I would have preferred a movie about her older sister. Barely worthwhile.

The dedication to the 70's vibe alone is impressive here, but everything else is mighty fine too. The performances, especially from Whitmore & Feldman, are excellent, as are the characters those two play. The artsy stuff can get a little overdone in points, but is mostly well contained & adds to the substance of the story rather than take away from it. The dream sequence segment was a bit of a letdown for me, but still pretty fun. Overall, very much worth a watch,& it's under 80 minutes to boot.

In many ways an Australian version of 'Napoleon Dynamite' but with a female lead (a simplistic take on the film, but true nonetheless), but unlike Hess' film this fails to deliver in any substantial way. Everything about it stinks of trying too hard.

Girl Asleep is a coming-of-age story that succeeds in capturing the mindset, neuroses and insecurities, of a teenager. Unfortunately, those insights aren't particularly interesting and the film is more intent on exploring it's own quirkiness with dance numbers and avant-garde visions.

Is more interested in being stylistically all over the place than in telling a story, having actual characters or being tonally consistent. Its attempts at being like Napoleon Dynamite, a Wes Anderson movie, a David Lynch movie, a serious teen drama, symbolism or whatever else there is, are almost always cringeworthy and make for some unintentional awkwardness. Which I thought to be intentional and funny at first. The bad acting didn't help.

Wonderful and touching movie that is the love child of Wes Anderson and Napeolen Dynamite.
