Is becoming a woman analogous, in some deep psychological way, to becoming a werewolf? Ginger is 16, edgy, tough, and, with her younger sister, into staging and photographing scenes of death. They've made a pact about dying together. In early October, on the night she has her first period, which is also the night of a full moon, a werewolf bites Ginger. Within a few days, some serious changes happen to her body and her temperament... (imdb)

Not a horror fan but this one manages to outdo its own genre. Instead of a mediocre werewolf flick Ginger Snaps is a darkly comedic horror flick about social outcasts finally growing up. It's blurring of Ginger's puberty and transformation into a creature of the full moon results in unexpected, but welcome, black humour. Kudos on the script which really makes this worth watch despite some spotty acting here and there. Also Mimi Rogers makes a great over-bearing but loving mother.

Gives an interesting twist to the whole werewolf concept and delivers quite well despite the budgetary confines. It avoids the mistakes of Dog Soldiers by limiting the exposure of the prosthetics/animatronics, where extended looks would have lost all credibility. Also gives me a chuckle that hardcore gorehounds might squirm a bit at the sight of dripping menstrual blood.

A very different take on what a girl's period can lead to, with the titular girl herself becoming a ravaging beast. But, then again, I thought Grizzly Man perhaps went too far in the other direction. Aaaaaaaaaaaand that's the worst thing I've ever written.

Expected something good from this cult classic & it delivered - even though I don't like the ending which leaves the motivations for B's inaction unclear. As I started watching, I began to think this was going to be another cliched Girl Power/Outsider Takes on the "Awful" Mainstream & there is some of that (why do they make the mom so mockworthy?), but it's actually about the fraying that happens when a close friend starts "growing up" faster than you & "BFF forever" expectations come apart.

Moody and very clever. Ginger Snaps is a thoughtful movie that connects elements of horror with puberty, elements of girls when they reach that age. And when it wants to be scary, it succeeds very well. I have no trouble believing Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle knew each other before filming, as their chemistry together is excellently done.

After an opening that is in danger of becoming a clichéd 'goth' horror film from the 90s, it was a delight to revisit this, after my adolescent years, and find that its an underrated gem, a comedy horror which has an emotional core and can be legitimately called a feminist work, exploring issues of female puberty through werewolf mythology. Its sad to see that its been largely forgotten because it is far more interesting than most horror films and by the end legitimately pulse racing.

It's a very sleek film that plays off stereotypes but manages to bounce off them and stay original. It's got a bit of a nuanced quirkiness in its dark humor comedic approach that would put most hipster-brand comedies to shame. It's refreshing to see a werewolf movie where you really don't know where the plot is going. That and the menstruation-lycanthropy confusion is really clever.

While "becoming a monster" has frequently been used as a metaphor for the onslaught of puberty, menstruation, and one's sexual awakening, what sets Ginger Snaps apart is the relationship between the two outcast sisters, and how Brigitte continues to care for Ginger even as she goes off the deep end. This emotional connection serves as the plot's anchor, and eventually builds to a powerful, poignant moment later on. A nice dose of black humor certainly doesn't hurt either.

Period melodrama (sorry),gory body horror and satire of high-school rape culture. The tv-movie stylings really helped and the effects were satisfyingly yucky -until they got 'overexposed' in the final act. That final -closer to straight horror movie- act dragged a bit but getting there was a lot of fun.

Pretty damn good different take on the werewolf myth, but it falls apart a bit towards the end. Hold back on the (not very good) special effects and cut it by 10 minutes and it would have been one of the best of its kind since An American Werewolf In London, but as it is it's... still pretty good for a genre that's been begging to be put out of its misery since, well, An American Werewolf In London.

Most werewolf movies involve a male main character turning into a werewolf, endangering the life of a woman he loves. "Ginger Snaps" is a wholly female werewolf movie, making lycanthropy (the werewolf disease) a metaphor for menstruation, puberty, and sexual awakening. It is very clever and, also, has some good scares. The two main characters are sisters and share a wonderful bond, mostly thanks to the acting of Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle.

I had no idea this was a werewolf movie before it started, that was a fun surprise. The two main characters are great and they're really why this works as well as it does. Probably the most "2000s" movie I've ever seen, and right at the start of the decade too. They should honestly show this in sex-ed class.

It has an interesting idea, and the film certainly feels like Heathers 2 mostly because that dude looks and acts like Slater. But, the runtime is an issue. Can you believe that I am complaining that a film is too long? Also, there's a scene in a park that looks and feels so Canadian that it made me tear up.

After a delightfully macabre opening set piece, and a first act that cleverly (and queasily) ties werewolf mythos to puberty anxiety, it's a small shame that this ultimately settles into a less ambitious teen horror movie, with a pair of dynamite performances from Perkins and Isabelle helping to mask the overall predictability of the plotting. Deserves some credit for its depiction of the two sisters increasingly fractured relationship; fun, but a mild disappointment given what might have been.

Lycan mythology subverted & plainly used as metaphor for hitting puberty. Over-bleak & grim, but fairly solid for what it is & good practical effects. I really enjoy the humble Werewolf as a monster, so points for ticking that box (even if I prefer them with more hair). But what I'm most concerned about is whether it's called Ginger Snaps because Ginger snaps (mentally) or because Ginger SNAP-SNAP-SNAPS (her jaws)... or is it just a fun reference to one of Britain's best biscuits?

These two edgelord sisters are fucking awesome, this ultra late 90s/00s coming of age horror has lived up to all the praise and interest I've heard for it. Super campy in it's own way takes a unique approach to the werewolf genre the same way movies like Let Me In would do for vampires years later. I thought this was incredibly fun and compelling. Two leads are fantastic which is a big centerpiece to why this works so well their bond stands out in spades, great chemistry.

The plot is questionable at best and the writing varies from surprisingly clever to almost cringey, but besides that it isn't hard to see why this movie has the following and reputation that it does. Solid performances by both leading actresses blended with moments of really great humor as well as some super well-done building of suspense and tension all combine to create an overall worthwhile watch.

Ginger Snaps was a surprise to me. The movie starts out and looks to be pretty low budget but as the movie rolls on one can see the quality put into this movie.
Ginger Snaps takes a lot of the cliches of werewolf fiction and adds a little something on top. I really enjoyed the accurate portrayal of high school life for these two misfit characters.
The very real feelings that this movie shows onscreen are similar to the way we all felt in high school. Misfits and cool kids each have probl

Is the film saying a girl developing and maturing into a woman makes her a monster or an empowered person? I'm not a woman, so my opinion on how they decided to portray this development and parallel it to becoming a werewolf isn't exactly the most informed, and honestly I still don't really know how I feel. In any case, the movie was well made, and however you interpret the mentality is up to you.

Maybe you have to be a big horror buff for this to work properly, but I didn't really see what was so clever about it. The puberty analogies are underlined and circled and highlighted to the point of distraction, and Fawcett's slackly-paced direction doesn't enliven proceedings much until the third act, which manages to be tense in spite of the terrible effects, and for which I bumped up my score a bit. Isabelle's pretty good, but Perkins is just terrible.

Some decent horror stuff near the end, but spends way too much time with the main characters being irritating and unlikeable. Also, it feels like more of a "teenage girl coming of age" story than a horror film for almost half of the film, which was not a good thing.

Ginger Snaps is one heck of a great movie. It has just about everything that you need from a movie. It's dramatic, funny, intelligent, and scary. It has well-written characters, sharp observations on the high school life and adolescence, and great performances. Is there anything wrong with it? Well, I'm disappointed in the way they decided to spell "Brigitte." I'm far more used to spelling it "Bridget." That's the only complaint that I have with it. Other than that, it's pretty much perfect.

This is a really respectable little horror movie. Sure it's a pretty on-the-nose metaphor, but I think that's fine. They're not trying to re-invent the genre or anything here. It gave me quite a few "eww" moments, mostly when it came to periods, and other bodily functions. I really have to give the movie points for its effects though. In a time when CGI was rapidly on the rise in everything, it looks like this movie stuck entirely to practical effects, and I admire that a lot.

Like a cross between Carrie and An American Werewolf in London. It's a little cheesy at times, and the special effects are not that great, but it manages to convey the horror of being an awkward teenage outcast quite well (especially with the character of Ginger's younger sister, excellently played by Emily Perkins). Some funny dialogue, and a surprisingly moving ending.

I REALLY couldn't get into this film. The plot is predictable and dull, none of the characters have any depth or dimension, and the effects & cutting are downright lazy. There are a few moments where the film manages to produce some genuine tension, but to be honest if thats what you're looking for you'd be better off watching a paranormal activity film. Not funny either. The most important point: why would you need to analogize periods with werewolfs? Periods are much scarier...
