Macready and Ford are both fine, but this one is all about Rita Hayworth. Her performance sizzles with playful contempt and powerful sexuality. She's a force to be reckoned with... and the more subdued version of her character in the final act kind of drags things down a bit. But otherwise the film is quite enjoyable. There's an unpredictability to the script that I found refreshing. You can kind of figure out the basics of where things are going, but the details are usually surprising.

The earliest scenes feature some sharp noirish dialogue, but that keeps slipping away as more and more melodrama crowds in. Hayworth is the reason to watch this film, of course. Before the plot necessitates her wallowing in the sort of lovelorn anguish that was the province of name actresses during the era, she has a real dazzle. She brims with sensuality and an alluring tanginess that arises when a character knows they're just a shade or two smarter than everyone else onscreen.

Rita Hayworth plays the worst fake-guitar I've ever seen. Long fingernails, rings on, just strumming the hell out an A minor while the music does its own thing. Also, this movie has to be up there as one of the most unnecessary voice-overs of all time. There's Sunset Blvd., and then there's Gilda. I'm not sure which of the two is worse. But I mean, that being said, the the movie wasn't bad. Way too long, but still not bad. Also, bitches be crazy.

I was enjoying this much more up till the halfway point, when the story took a turn for the ridiculous and melodramatic [not that these elements weren't evident before but nowhere near as thick]. Still - Hayworth is phenomenal and the photography can be quite striking.

Wow--a compendium of sexual innuendo ("If I was a ranch, they'd call me the Bar Nothing" "I could help you get back into practice--dancing, that is"). Featuring a host of fascinating peripheral characters as well, including the most interesting washroom attendant in history (who looks like Tim Conway with a mustache). Macready was especially effective. Then there's Rita...well, being Rita (need she do more?).

This is a recognizably well-made noir flick, but I can't see how someone could actually enjoy it unless they like awful people. Gilda does awful things and makes awful choices, and Hayworth delivers it really well. She's repulsive. Ford does well, too, but his character isn't much easier to get behind. Also, I don't buy the "thin line between love and hate" thing. If you love someone you're going to do your best not to be awful to them.

A magnificent looking psychological thriller. The psychosexual tension between Gilda and Johnny is palpable, due mainly to the superb performances of Hayworth and Ford. It is easy to see why Hayworth was the top pin-up girl at the time; she's stunning. But Hayworth's beguiling performance is due to much more than just her looks; it's the way she moves and the way she delivers those stinging quips. Ford oozes insecurity, which bubbles to the surface in the form of Johnny's violent outbursts.

More sensuous, less sinister than most films of its ilk, but its melodramatic intrigue, perfunctory though it may occasionally be, makes a brilliant staging ground for Rita Hayworth's sizzling performance at center stage. Her all-too-forward innuendos and dance numbers practically threaten to melt the projector.

At it's core, the story is ultimately a defense of shitty, misogynistic, abusive relationships through the excuse of it being a "love-hate relationship", and that's not really something I can get behind or defend, but let's be honest the only reason why anyone watches this is because of Rita Hayworth, and my god is she magnificent. She is so seductive, sexy, charismatic and charming that it's impossible to keep your eyes off of her. That black dress even has it's own wiki page, it's that iconic.

If the film's primary goal was to make Rita Hayworth a bombshell superstar, mission accomplished. If it was to craft plausible drama with anything resembling relatable characters, they failed miserably. While one expects characters in films like this 2 be as big as their stylized realities, the leads here engage in one of the looniest, most dysfunctional relationships ever. Instead of being drawn in by suspense or romance, u'll spend the last hour pulling back as u scratch ur head in incredulity

It is next to impossible to take your eyes off of Rita Hayworth. She dominates every scene she's in. Unfortunately the rest of the film doesn't match her magnetism and what you're left with is an unevem, though still captivating, film that probably should have been a lot better.

It sets off to become one of the most important dramas in cinema history and does pretty well in fact for about 75 minutes. Then, after running out of all the amazingly witty dialogues, the twists and turns and the clever subplots (such as the spy part of it all), it turns into an extremely cheesy, annoyingly repetitive, pointless mass of ridiculous drama sequences. Pity.

Stunning stuff. Rita Hayworth sizzles on the screen, the atmosphere is electrifying in most of the scenes she's in and the romantic tension between Gilda and Johnny surpasses any other film couple I can think of. The setting and plot seems to owe something to Casablanca, although it dragged on a little longer and wasn't as tight as that film. However, it's still a stunning watch, both for the characters and for making the viewer constantly second-guess where their allegiance should be lying.

While careful direction from Vidor and three engrossing lead performances afford a simmering tension to each passing scene, it’s all raised to boiling point by the thick, humid gloom of Rudolph Maté’s photography, which practically presses the oxygen out of every frame. The weak element is the story, with clumsy plot contrivances and an inexplicably upbeat ending undermining the highly effective noir mood. Rita Hayworth looks rather nice too.

I'm not a fan of the message this movie sends, & I'm also not a fan of how much steam it loses in the second half. Also, for some reason I expected a movie called Gilda to be primarily about...er, Gilda. Silly me. That said, Rita Hayworth delivers an iconic performance in what quite honestly is an otherwise average film. It does have some beautiful shots, is well acted, & moves fast enough, but it's still so scarily eager to turn its fiery heroine into a weeping willow by the end & that bugs me.

3. Needless to say, Rita is spectacular. She balances a perfect mixture of perceived corruption and seeping purity, while standing her firm ground and strong presence alongside powerhouse performers such as Glenn Ford and George Macready. Her sing and dance sequences are mesmerising, and so is her intro sequence - unforgettable. I felt the ending was a tad lackluster following a film full of a unique and foreboding atmosphere, with the three main performances coming to life each in its own way.

Noir-ish film where the three leads all want something and will pretty much do anything to get it -- even when that puts them at odds with each other. Hayworth steals the movie; the scenes without her seem to drag on with exposition. When she's on screen, though, her sharp dialogue make this well worth watching. (One drawback is there aren't that many characters to cheer for; it seems odd that one would be rooting for the femme fatale.)

If phenomenal individual performances can carry an average movie like Daniel Day-Lewis does in There Will Be Blood, I don't see why Rita Hayworth doesn't deserve the same credit. She's the highlight in every scene in a movie that otherwise loses steam halfway through from a good noir beginning.

You couldn't hold a candle to all other classics if this film had the second half it truly deserves. The opening scenes were incredible and when the canary makes her appearance she's singing remarks so sharp you could use them to cut the tension. Hayworth's sultry performance is mesmirising and only seems to gain traction and energy (her close ups and musical numbers are cinema gold), so it's a pity the story begins to drag a little, which turns off the magic and makes it a movie again.

Efficiently crafted, smartly written and smoothly atmospheric, "Gilda" is a highly enjoyable noir, bolstered by Rita Hayworth's luminous performance. Although the first part is arguably superior to the second and the ending is (unsurprisingly) too sugary, there's enough witty dialogue, strong visuals and delicious innuendo to deem this a satisfactory overall film.

For some reason I felt it was kind of intilligent, at least for the time it came out. It's Rita Hayworth's film, and although she's cute in the first half of the film she becomes annoying in the second half, so I can't really say I like her. The whole second half of the film is obnoxious and melodramatic actually.
