Shame that Nazis made it mute.

The “malice of the object” is something of a German tradition since F. Th. Vischer’s humorous novel Auch Einer (1879). Here it is utilised for the means of a trick film, emphasising the subject’s anarchist potential; as it goes on the topic is lost somewhat and it becomes more standard free-association surrealism.

You know a short is good if the Nazis tried hard to destroy it. Marvelously avant-garde: Dada? Dada

An animated film, some hand drawn and some stop motion, from Dadaist filmmaker Hans Richter. Essentially a series of intentionally bizarre images where everyday objects defy their purpose ... bowler hats fly, a necktie refuses to sit still, a target turns into a man's head. The Nazis hated Richter and attempted to destroy all copies of this film. Imagine being so dark, hateful and twisted that you see flying bowler hats as a threat.

A very polished dadaist short; oddly amusing and engaging at times.

Damn you dada for making me try and construct a narrative for this, despite me knowing that it very deliberately doesn't have one. I was very impressed with some of the effects. The stop-motion parts were extremely smooth and fluid and the movement of the hats were so free and life-like. It must have taken a long time to get just right. Don't ever equate the frivolity of dada with sloppy execution, it takes a lot of work for true surrealism to be realised and you can see the effort in this.

An enjoyable and creative piece of surrealism. It could use a tad more energy and variety, but it works all the same.
