Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is set in 2032, when the line between humans and machines has been blurred almost beyond distinction. Visual symphonies of 2D/3D dance to an eerie taiko-powered soundtrack. A bodyless consciousness roaming the vast and limitless Net. An inverted mechanical Pinocchio: a real Ghosted boy reveres dolls/puppets. A genetically recreated basset hound frolics. Compact yet slow-moving, Innocence sits with hefty themes, nested in a complex corporate scandal plot. The punchline flinches at its own dualist-vs-monoist buildup leaning towards... do ghosts or real matter, if you have a cute dog in your life?

A slower, more somber and melancholy mood piece when compared to its predecessor. It is also imparted with an excessive and heavier hand, wherein dialogue largely consists of characters literally reciting philosophic works back and forth at each other. But its ambition and heft is undeniable, a deep incision on the human obsession with recreating its own image, and the ambiguity of "Life" in the digital age of external memory. The integration of traditional and computer animation is stunning.

Delicious. Especially the Gothic haunted mansion dream-trap time-looping sequence where the protagonists are rescued by obscure German mythological symbolism (and this is all orchestrated in cyberspace by hackers ...) I love that the GITS movies (and animé in general) aren't afraid that the audience can't keep up. And I really CAN'T at times, probably because I don't have a well-functioning cyberbrain ... whatever. Mmm, pretty animation.

Pretentious, and not as engaging as I'd hoped. Having characters quote philosophers or classical writings gets old very fast. The story is never really engaging, and seems to mainly be concerned with wanting the viewer to think it's deep and complex. The animation is pretty good, but the added CGI often falls flat.

Ghost in the Shell - Round 2: Decent animation, but less explosive action set pieces and thus less for me to be excited about, and more "you're quoting Milton.." style dialogue and thus more of me vomiting in my own mouth.

A complex, disturbing work that is more a search for personal identity in a postmodern society, comprised of symbols and complex hierarchical structures (and therefore a text that summarizes philosophy, like Baudrillard and Geertz), and NOT a standard actioner (as it was advertised). If you like your films nuanced and talky, then it's a masterpiece. If not, then you will be severely disappointed.

Not as good as the first film. This one does feature more Togusa, who is definitely my favorite character from the first film and the series. Kinda fucked up at the end. I'd recommend watching this one immediately after finishing the first film. Might make more sense that way.

Watching this movie I wondered if it really was a sequel, or the creators created a movie around philosophical idea of a human yearning to be Gods. The ideas discussed were heavy, and sometimes felt apart from the movie. Some scene were noteworthy, especially at the end of the movie (Kim Palace). Overall an interesting watch, but I would rather it lower than its predecessor

Batou is a giant character -- he's like a tougher, unsentimental version of Rick Deckard --, and manages to give this sequel some greatness, but Oshii seems too eager to balance philosophy (Confucius, The Bible again, Milton) with 3D animation (that almost ruins the whole thing), making Innocence hardly rewarding. Still, there are some great thoughts on what lies behind human desire to create robots and toys, and (spoiler alert) the return of Major (as a sex doll) to save the day.

I'm surprised and pleased by how much I enjoyed this. The atmosphere is rich and utterly captivating, whilst the animation looks stunning. Though I can kind of understand people's complaints with how the philosophical content is handled, personally I found it quite fascinating.

As for the details of the merging of traditional hand drawn animation, there are a few scenes where the Babylon 5-like ships or statues don't quite fit, but for the most part, the expansive scenes have incredible depth, and the close-ups are as exquisite as a portrait. You are truly missing out on a feat of artistic beauty if pass this movie up. And overall, GITS:2 is clearly in of the best new cyberpunk movies out. Watch it - you won't be disappointed.

The visuals are stunning and the plot is quick paced and engrossing, but that is to be expected. However, this film almost comes off as pretentious with its overt attempts to be philosophically intriguing. I mean honestly, quoting a philosopher every once in a while is fine, but I felt like I was being fed more quotes than dialogue as the film progressed. The original raised psychoanalytical points more subtly and was more effective overall. This movie was merely interesting and pretty.

Honestly, this movie is basically one long philosophy quote. Batou or some other character is almost always quoting something. Still, this sequel to the original is very entertaining and I'll admit to initially liking it more than it's elder sibling. Time and age change things, though. A very good looking film, though. I missed Motoko, though. A ten minute cameo just isn't enough.

Wears its BLADE RUNNER inspiration proudly on its sleeve, and the at times stunning animation almost makes you yearn for a full-on BLADE RUNNER anime; that it made me so overtly think of the earlier film ends up being a weakness, as this never really finds its own identity (especially when sprinkling in the hilariously exposition heavy pronouncements of its philosophical ideas). The heavy-handed and dull script is a major weakness, especially compared to the shot of adrenaline first film.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is one of the peaks of the GitS franchise, definitely better than the first movie, and is a contender for the best anime movie ever made. Stunning to look at, a focus on the franchise's best two characters, and an extended look at what makes someone human and someone beyond such, this sci-fi neo-noir thriller is like a more intelligent Blade Runner where every "set piece" is jaw-dropping. On the downside, the soundtrack isn't fantastic and the quoting is absurd.

This has to be one of the best anime movies I have ever seen, and easily one of my favorite movies. It improves on what is already great in its characters, style, animation (breath-taking), and tone. It's a creepy movie but never to fault and portrays themes of control very well. Absolutely loved it.

I actually ended up liking this one a bit better than the first film. I'm not entirely sure why, but I think it felt more focused, and I didn't feel like I was always trying to figure out what was going on. The animation's pretty good, but I didn't care for the 3D elements; they always look awkward when they're integrated with the 2D animation. I also enjoyed the characters' musings on artificial intelligence. It's still miles away from my favourite anime films, but I liked it.

It is rare to find a sequel that is better than the original, and rarer still when the original is as good as GITS. GITS 2 is just that good though, with exciting action scenes, daring experimental narrative techniques, deep and thought provoking subject matter, and a willingness to stray quite far from the first movie's formula and deliver something genuinely new.

It has a caotic storytelling more than a complex plot, son of the noir genre, with an over-use of philosophical quotes like usual in this legendary franchise -- well, even more than usual -- but probably it's the best "Ghost in the Shell" product. Evocative as very few films that i ever seen, visually stunning except for some bad mixing of CGI and hand-drawn animations, full of visual and philosophical syncretism.

A beautiful anime-take on the philosophical openness of something like a Godard film. Oshii's love for dogs and animals shines through just as much as his interest in robotics and the nature humanity. The scene in the mansion is especially moving, though I'm a sucker for repetition.

This is still some good sci-fi animation here which is probably a little deeper in thought than the first. This one focuses more on the cyber cops which is the director and writer's choice. The animation is truly stunning and brings the futuristic world alive.

Too slow, I ended up going doing something else during some of the scenes where nothing was happening, at that point it's hard to come back for the rest. It's also bad writing when you never expect the main characters to come to any harm, it also makes the action scenes boring because you don't care what's going to happen, you know the characters will be fine. The protagonists are also unsympathetic because Batou is a ruthless murderer who kills at random and the other guy isn't developed enough

Spectacular adaption of Shirow's work. A fan could spot the influences from the comic which the director drawed upon. It's a lot more "thought-heavy" than the first GiTS, but I think it's also a lot more meaningful.

Confusing if you havent seen the first one, but utterly incredible animation and atmosphere. The story is really a conceit to carry forward some amazing visual images and ponder typical Japanese imponderables. This is not a cartoon for kids - sex and violence abound, in a very thought-provoking way. The first GITS looks to me to have been quite a major influence on the Matrix - this one is just plain breathtaking.

Watched this straight after the first and it's not in the same league. The stylishness of the original is replaced by a jarring mix of CGI and traditional animation. The plot really only occurs during the first and last 10 minutes.
