Despite being intermittently creepy, Ghost Ship falls flat thanks to its characters and plot. You don't need a lot to make a successful horror film. All it needs is to be scary, but if it isn't, audiences start looking at other things. The foundations, in this case, are weak at best, and completely broken at worst. The film just doesn't hold up, even if the set design and location are top-notch.

It's hard not to notice both the strength and the weakness of Ghost Ship. In that it happens during the first scene. The movie peaks as high as it ever will. Which means it contains a pretty tremendous scene. But then is let down by the rest being a fairly standard horror flick. Although the ending twist was intriguing if nothing else.

The opening scene sets out an expectation that the rest of the movie simply cannot follow up to: mediocre acting, silly plot, no real scares to be had here. A couple of okay scenes (like eating the beans -scene) but there's not much to hold your interest here. So mediocre, it's kinda painful. The ending was also such a bad choice, leaving it out there with 'oooh suspense' while the suspense died in the first few minutes of the movie. Don't get too bold with your own 'ingenuity', film.

Now just try to imagine what Carpenter would've made with this gold fever ghost story. Too bad is just flat in imagination and so badly put together -- despite that cool scene with the guys eating maggots thinking it's old but still good canned food, the amount of lazy expository material is insane; that scene where Margulies' character just watches the entire past of the ship is hilarious.

Mash-up of THE SHINING and TITANIC should have been more entertaining, but it does barely hold on thanks to a strong cast doing their best to maintain interest (I’d follow Byrne’s brogue almost anywhere) and a socko of an opening scene which keeps the film mildly humming for the first half. Expectedly dodgy early aughts CGI aside, the grotty ship is well realised and does its best to provide some grungy atmosphere, but the lack of scares, and monotonous pacing, eventually drag the film down.

This is pretty good horror film. The ship itself is totally creepy and filmmakers are doing really good job to keep viewers frightened during most of the film running period. Only the end is totally lame.

That opening scene was the perfect brand of stupid to get me very excited. What follows is several different boring horror tropes smashed together with a confused and overlong plot. Karl Urban must have made this between Lord of the Rings movies because even he is checked out.

One of the very first films I rented, but, being aged ~11, my buddy down the street and I were too chicken-shit to watch it after we saw The Ring, so he left and, bored, I watched it on my own at night anyway. It was surprising to me then that it wasn't that scary after all, at least compared to The Ring, which was terrifying.

Not scary at all but I don't really care about that anyway as I'm not a fan of horror films. I thought the setting was pretty nice but that is probably the best thing about this film. The plot and characters could have used a lot more work. I felt like the ending was very abrupt and the actual ending was very dissatisying. Not recommended.

Being a fan of horror, this gets high in the 60's. Otherwise it wud be low in the 60's, not particularly a good movie but not a bad one either. Nearly everything in this movie is standard, tho the first act is drawn out a bit too much, resulting in bad pacing. For the fans.

Great opening scene, and the first half's actually not that bad. But once the hauntings begin, it relies too much on set pieces. Some of the characterizations change drastically for no apparent reason, and parts of the plot feel like they were just thrown in on the fly. The idea is cool, but they were trying too hard to go for the scare and somehow lost the movie in the mix.

Word of advice: If you walk out right when you see someone floating in the ocean with a suitcase, what you will have on your hands is a perfectly respectable horror offering worth seeing for the Halloween season once "The Ring" has already been viewed. Sit through the last minute, and leave with a bitter taste in your mouth. This movie is so solidly made for so long that the viewer must question how anyone could have thought the chosen conclusion was a good idea.

Another addition to the mindless horror flick category, it intersperces sections of decentness with a majority of flawed and failing set pieces and a strange half baked plotline. Throw in the derivitive fallback on the odd cheap jump scares, along with a can full of maggots, and it becomes pretty clear Ghost Ship is headed for shallow waters. Apart from the opening set pieces are also predictable, preventing the film from providing any of the classic adventure film suspense it desires so much.

There are some brutal and somewhat creative deaths for masochists (particularly the cable scene), but anyone looking for an interesting story or unique conclusion need not apply. There's nothing that appeals to any sense other than primal fear and sexual perversion, no real moments of psychological suspense; just recycled 'shock scenes' set to industrial rock music meant to make you jump out of your seat. I'm not a fan of horror/slasher films, so you can take my review with a grain of salt.
