Don't understand all the negativity, it's a fun film, some crazy stuff, but all quite enjoyable. It's quite outside the box, not your average Hollywood fare. I liked it. I wonder if anybody but Gibson played in it, it would have gotten much better reviews. Besides his abnormal antics in his personal life he is still a good actor and director. This film proves it once again.

Get the Gringo or (How I Spent My Summer Vacation) as it's also known, looked like a lot of fun and a chance for Mad Mel to remind everyone how good an actor he is. Sadly however it's a rather dull and forgettable experience. Tonally it feels a lot like a Robert Rodriguez film but without all the fun set pieces. And the one, only and very short lived shoot out felt reminiscent of 'Desperado'. But otherwise there's absolutely nothing to take way from this film other than the novelty of Mad Mel.

Not awful - maybe Mel does have something left in the tank. It helps that this is a role he's played before and the genre feels quite 90s. Nobody is trying to reinvent the wheel here. Squint your eyes and you can almost imagine that Gibson has just stepped out of a film like Payback, Ransom or Air America. Also the film has a nice hot'n'grimy aesthetic which does a good job of helping to depict a Mexican prison camp.

Unfortunately Mel Gibson has drunk himself out of a career but I for one find him a better and more charismatic actor than respectable, bankable, safe action stars like Cruise or Will Smith. This movie won't change anyone's life but it's far more entertaining, clever and even mature than any other action film from the last couple of years.

It is an entertaining movie but it's also really forgettable. With that said; I enjoyed myself well enough but man shit just comes together a little TOO neatly, even in movie land. Yeah sure there's some struggle but it's minimal and shit happens that just boggles your mind. Thought the set-up (like, of the actual prison) was a col idea, though.

Despite a somewhat flimsy story, the action and dialogue are solid, the pace is terrific, the characters are well defined and, crucially, the film's tone is never too serious in spite of some occasional nastiness. It's a fine return to form for Gibson, who is excellent throughout.

I don't know if Get the Gringo will turn Mel Gibson's career around, but for the controversial star, it's a valiant effort with decent execution. Inside this film is a well-crafted environment for a tale of survival and character drama, where the prison acts as a separate and ever-changing character. If you don't hate Gibson enough as a person to stay away from his films, and you really shouldn't, this is an attempt at a comeback that is worth a watch.

'Get the Gringo' is a grindhouse style thriller elevated by the always-engaging Mel Gibson who still has all the charisma in the world. Hopefully he has a resurgence soon. As for 'Gringo,' it proves to be an entertaining violent mess. Think 'Payback' minus the jazzy suavity and you have Gibson doing the same thing here inside a Mexican prison. The film's aesthetic is memorable, but the movie is not.

I'm tempted to say that Gibson can be be a compelling screen presence despite his rampant craziness, but truth be told, he's a compelling screen presence because of his rampant craziness. All absurdities and familiar genre tropes aside, this is a compellingly gritty and good-looking crime flick that benefits from Gibson's crazy eyes. It's got the right amount of style and is vaguely reminiscent of Peckinpah at times

Not really memorable. Mel Gibson has superpowers with fighting and guns despite his elderly appearance. Convoluted plot involving harvesting a specific kid's liver even though they're in freaking Mexico (I only point this out because the rest of the movie doesn't have any qualms about sticking to stereotypes). Lame dad jokes as punchlines: "gives a new meaning to hard time hue hue" when seeing favored prisoners with women. Fav scene: setting the fire to steal from crack shack.

This was a pleasant surprise knowing nothing about it before watching. This type of role is just begging for Gibson to be the star, and he certainly shines here. No PG bs action here which is a necessity to show the roughness of the situation.

Whether you love him or you hate him, Mel Gibson makes some damn good movies. Get the Gringo is another one you can add to that list. You're thrown into the madness right away and the movie kept my attention all the way through. It's got that tongue in cheek humor pasted throughout and it's got plenty of exciting action to boot. This movie proves that Mel has still got it but unfortunately people can't ignore his recent public outbursts. Definitely check this one out! 4 STARS

The perfect film for a night's viewing if one is after a violent film in the Peckinpah style without the elegiac sense of an age ending and turning into something worse. A couple of far-fetched moments fit our own Comic Book Zeitgeist. Gibson is a much better actor than he needs to be, but I suppose it helps pay the rent.

I was hoping for a return to form for Gibson, playing the lovable rouges he played in the 80's. They pretty much forgot the lovable part. A fine enough film, but Mel has a bit of a mean spirited look on his face most of the time and they forgot to be bring enough quirky humour to this. Stick to directing mate.

Those who long for the era of Gibson's hard-bitten movie characters are in for a banquet with this authentically tough, enterprising hard-line caper, with honed flairs of Elmore Leonard and Donald Westlake. What sells it is not only a rejuvenating comeback for its star and his rapport with a child inmate, but the hairpin plot, which is exceedingly original for an action flick.

Stylish, gritty direction and an on-form Gibson in a role perfect for him are the standouts in this surprisingly impressive Mexican prison drama. It wastes no time getting into the story and grabs you straight away, but at only 90 minutes the main criticism here is that too much is thrown into the mix, affecting the focus and even making things a little confusing to follow. An extra half-hour padding out the plot (and improving on the shoddy ending) would've made it a keeper.

An unexpectedly good movie from Mel Gibson who is a career criminal with an attitude thrown into a strange and corrupt Mexican prison. Lots of action and interesting plot twists, but unfortunately some of the dialog is spoken in Spanish. The plot premise gets stretched pretty thin at times, but the movie flows surprisingly well. I liked it, even with it's plot weaknesses and Spanish sections. Worth watching.

Entertaining crime caper that is lead well by Gibson, but is too uneven and never big or outrageous enough to be really of any quality. I wanted something more lowbrow (Mel killing people whilst dressed as a Rabbi for example?) with a hint more grindhouse, but this is never that. Even so, despite some average direction from Grunberg there are a couple of really entertaining scenes (loved Mel's Clint impression!). Overall it feels a little half-baked, but will entertain for 90 minutes.

Completely overrated. I don't know where all the good scores come from, but it sure isn't for the great story, because there actually isn't one. This film is poorly directed and some scenes are just copies out of prison break season 3. I liked seeing Gibson again, but that's about it.

I liked this film. I thought Mel Gibson not only did a good job acting in this but he also did a good job writing it as well. I would describe this movie as a heist movie and a prison movie as well. Maybe even a medical drama with some action peppered in. Regardless of how you classify this movie, it is a lot of fun. An alternate title for this is "How I Spent My Summer Vacation", and frankly with how crazy Gibson is, he would probably try hanging out in prison for fun.

It started awesome - dark and humorous. But it went on a serious downslide the moment that a kid appeared. For obvious reasons i couldn't believe that a con at this level can evolve such an attachment to 2 random (english speaking) mexicans in less than 2 days. The ending moments were pathetic and i wish that the kid never existed in first place. The pacing was fine though

"STOP bleeding on my money!" If Guy Ritchie ever went Mexican it would probably end up something like this. Nobody takes Gibson seriously anymore -- maybe not even him --, and we can see this clearly in this crazy mexican/american flick -- it's like Guy Ritchie mixing Robert Rodriguez. Gibson returns to action movies as this dirty, tongue-in-cheek anti-hero who just wants his money -- or, as Gibson, his fame -- back. Eventually, it fails to fully entertain for being too much self-aware of its flaws -- the script feels both smart and lazy --, but the setting of El Pueblito is worth a look.

A lean, gritty, old-school neo-noir; you could easily imagine someone like Bogart in the lead. It's a bordertown riff on Gibson's PAYBACK, and it's almost shockingly well-done, with tough action, appealingly broadly drawn characters and a crisp, zippy script by Gibson and Grunberg. Doesn't pretend to occur in anything resembling the real world, but it's great, satisfying escapist fun, one of the most sheerly entertaining movies of the year to date.

Don't know how Gibson stomached being around so many minorities for the duration of the shooting schedule, must've been hell for him. Forgettable movie with an unbelievable premise.
