As a story and a movie, "Get On Up" isn't really anything special, the first couple minutes contain a killer introduction, but everything after is a standard biopic, without much to set it apart--except for the music. But honestly, I'd have been happy with an hour and a half of James Brown set to a still image of a cantaloupe.

Imagine if Ray Charles could see, was even more selfish and a lot more funky... there, I just saved you two hours of your life.

Okay so I never was a huge fan of James Brown or his music But somehow this movie managed to move me I think largely due to Chadwick Boseman's performance

Chadwick Boseman gives another really good performance in this film. The script is standard for a biography film. There are a number of interesting scenes. Overall I would recommend this film.

What a mess. The non-linear storytelling is the film's ultimate downfall, saved perhaps only by Boseman's incredible performance.

Chadwick Boseman does an incredible job transforming himself into James Brown and it's clear he embraced the role with respect and passion. Unfortunately the script just doesn't work to his favor here in its entirety. The way the time skips from one place to another does feel a littel bit confusing at times, but what most took me out of the movie were the scenes where James Brown is addressing the viewer directly. This could have been a whole lot better, but now it's just mediocre.

The first few moments suggest something unorthodox, more eccentric even than the usual music bio, but it quickly settles onto the usual path - excessive length, time jumping, checklist of hits, snatches of troubled childhood, buffoonish execs and on we go. Given that awards groups flip for this kind of thing it's surprising that Boseman gained so little traction for this role - his charismatic performance is the whole show.

Blurayrip RARBG.

By the numbers biopic of James Brown. Not a bad film but hard for me to believe that such a crazy and iconic legend as James Brown makes for a less compelling story than Johnny Cash or Ray Charles...

A pretty standard biopic in terms of content (it's somewhat non-linear in construction but not in a distinctive way), and it's limited because of that, but this film succeeds because it actually manages to capture the spirit of the man and his music. It's important that we feel how dynamic Brown is, both in his personal life and performances, and Taylor's snappy direction and especially Boseman's excellent performance capture that. Better and more fun than I expected.

The life of James Brown (Chadwick Boseman), told in a semi-linear fashion which never reaches the associative heights of NIXON, but shakes things up nonetheless. Tate Taylor's direction, much improved from THE HELP, creates some dazzling moments, especially the musical performances, which are as blisteringly energetic as you could hope for. And Boseman plays Brown to a tee--his voice, his moves, his character all come perfectly to life. The script is shallow and it's overlong, but it works.

Chadwick Boseman is amazing, but like so many other biopics, the rest of the film falters in an uneven and too-reverent depiction of Brown's life.

Oscar material ruined... Beautiful direction, great performances, wonderful photography...yet everythings all over the place

Worth seeing just to see Chadwick Boseman channel James Brown with an electrifying, highly physical performance. The musical sequences are appropriately energetic and beautifully shot, but the flashbacks of Brown's childhood are full of the usual dull biopic tropes. At least it tries something different by jumping through different points in time rather than being a straightforward biopic.

I really wanted this movie to be good. I really hope there is another movie made about the great James Brown.

Well acted by chadwick Boseman but failed to entertain the whole way down. The broken timeline was a nice thing but it did not work as good as it should.

Three white guys try to tell the tumultuous story of James Brown's life. The results are like eating cornbread and collard greens with mayonnaise. It's only worth watching for Chadwick Boseman's incredible performance as the Godfather of Soul.

I don't care how loyal to the true story this is. What I care about is how beautifully put together the movie is, and how pleasing the acting was. I was on the edge of my seat at many moments.

Despite some stellar supporting turns, Get on Up fails to excite as a film. Besides, Brown was way more of a train wreck than this..come on.

Skipping from time period to time period with little or no regard for plot mechanics is a bizarre choice, and the fourth-wall-breakage doesn't land here as well as it did in, say, Jersey Boys. But much of the material works well, when considered scene-by-scene. And, crucially, Chadwick Boseman's performance as Brown is utterly flawless, one of the year's most impressive, & he alone makes up for many of the movie's problems. He heals the fractures and turns this into an overall solid portrait.

Dynamic and engaging (if familiar), 'Get on Up' stands as another testament to the talent of Boseman, who does the Godfather of Soul justice with another electric performance.

James Brown was abused and abusive. He also made some badass music, and I highly recommend watching some of his concerts on youtube. But don't watch this movie if you want some actual soul, because it has no soul. It's just your standard fractured narrative 140 minute biopic. Note: I hate Tate Taylor and sorda want to punch him in the face.

James Brown fans will certainly enjoy the performances and appreciate an inside look at what created the "hardest working man in show business." But they won't necessarily leave the theater singing "I Feel Good." (pluggedin.com)
