Deceptively complex comedy/drama, which skillfully examines the options (or lack thereof) for women in Britain in the still not-too-distant past. The contrasts established between the forthright, bitchy second lead (a superb Rampling) and "nice girl" Georgy (Redgrave) are fascinating to consider, all leading up to a finale which feels like a cheat for a second -- until you notice the conflicted emotions crossing Redgrave's face. "Fancy free" indeed; a quite troubling commentary in many respects.

Georgy has to navigate some pretty unpleasant alternatives as she struggles to find happiness and fulfillment in 60s London. The movie seemed like something Todd Solondz would've done, if he were directing back in the day (and I mean that as a compliment; Solondz has sympathy for the unloved, with a penchant for putting us through the excrutia, ting indignities they face). "Hey there, Georgy Girl! Swinging down the street, so fancy-free..." Sorry, had to get that out of my system.

I mean it was enjoyable performance wise... but I'm left with a sour taste in the mouth, very sexist ideology in the film. Some of the scenery was quite pretty to look at.

Featuring a plus-sized protagonist this touches on interesting subjects as the influence of beauty standards on self-image. The plot tho suffers from the cramping a whole novel into a 90 min movie syndrome. It is very frantic. The ending can be read as either very problematic confirming old-fashioned gender roles in an inappropriate relationship or as the successful choice of a self-determining woman securing her future. The absolute main reason to see this is a superb LR as the vivacious Georgy

Fun coming-of-age reminiscent of Frances Ha when we see Redgrave run down the street in black and white. Rampling did well as the unsympathetic bad girl. Meredith had options but chose the worst one; Georgy didn't have options but made out better. Fav scene: when child welfare comes to do a check and Bates blunders in unawares.

this somehow mixed a verite cinema visual style with farcical chaplin-esque performances, which didn't always work well and at times made the film uncomfortable to watch. it is also terribly dated - the worldview of the film and the female lead's concerns are horribly sexist by todays standards, but maybe not so much so in 1966. it feels like a simple, mindless comedy for the average 1960s housewife, and on that account i think it delivers, because it was still moderately fun to watch at times.

Gloriously offbeat.

Frantic black farce which seems determined to shock, but has a few good scenes once you get attuned to the mood. A censorship milestone.

Really bad emendation of the title track in the finale though (and what are we to make of that ending anyway?--seems awfully cynical). Charlotte Rampling plays one of the all-time repellent characters.
