I'm sensing a trend in the films of Shinya Tsukamoto. Impressive camerawork & enticing opening bits collapse when the actual story develops. Unfortunately, it happened very quickly this time.

It shines when approaching Tsukamoto's familiar zones, like the twin's beast-like appearance and self-mutilation. The rest feels a little too obvious.

This movie tries to emphasize the disparities between rich & poor as good & evil. A good twisted plot. A doctor's amnesiac wife, is the former lover of his twin brother who eventually takes over his life, kills his parents & holds him captive in a well. This is all great, except there are many long boring protracted scenes, poor pacing, some terrible music, some uninspired acting & odd plot diversions that together subtract from it greatly.

The film fails when it takes itself far too literally --- it succeeds when Tsukamoto insinuates it's all a giant mindfuck. True psychological horror probably doesn't need explanation.
