I actually thought this juvenile, unapologetically R-rated cops 'n' robbers shoot-em-up pulp kind of hit the spot as a chaser after Oscar season. Like half of Sean Penn's screen time is him killing his own mooks for failing him, which becomes hilarious. I would have given it a higher score, HOWEVER, I'm forced as a matter of principle to deduct 10 points for them slicing up and reshooting the movie after the Aurora shooting. Letting James Holmes dictate the content of our movies? Fuck that.

It got tommy guns, hats, cigarettes, a more evil than evil gangster and therefore also a squad who wants to stop him. But everything seems like play and pretend. As if Fleischer just sent all the good, but badly cast actors into a huge walk in closet and said: "When you come out, we're gonna play gangster." That's just not enough - you also need a story and scenes that actually makes sense mr. Fleischer! Instead, watch The Untouchables again!

Comparisons to L.A. Noire are completely unwarranted; Unlike the revolutionary video game, this doesn't come with a wireless controller that allows you drive recklessly through the streets of late 40's Los Angeles and apprehend a pervy upskirt photographer.

Huge excellent cast. Josh Brolin leads some LAPD cowboys against corruption in Los Angeles in the mid 50's. Ryan Gosling was good. Emma Stone was adorable as the moll. I liked Robert Patrick as the sharpshooter & Mireille Enos as the wife. There was something very satisfying about seeing Sean Penn get beaten bloody. The story seemed haphazard, but it was inspired by true events. More potential than was realized. If you're in the mood for a mob shoot-em up, this is somewhat entertaining.

The comic book remake of Mulholland Falls with paper-thin characters; Sean Penn as Al Pacino in Dick Tracy and e-v-e-r-y gangster cliche down to guns in violin cases. They even resurrected Nick Nolte! But if you like 1950s LA based crime tales as much as I, and you can disregard that you know all the plot points going into it, it's actually pretty enjoyable.

Starts off well, but in the end this is a film without direction and seemingly without anyone striving for perfection in any area. Tries too hard to be "cool" and ends up being too over the top and wacky, flimsy in tone and poor in execution. Wears everything on its sleeve and the violence and potentially great villain lose all their impact early on when you realize that the film has no surprises left. I've never seen Gosling and Stone this unimpressively mediocre. Disappointing.

Based on real events which conveniently looked like a video game. It has everything a good video game needs, nice musical score, a good villain, a 6 men squad to pick your player from... you know the drill. Things that made it more watchable; great song choices and the costumes: The fashion back then was amazing, I should give them that and they should make a Batman movie where Sean Penn is Two-Face.

Gangster Squad was slated by many, but personally I don't think that all the negativity is warranted. This is by no means The Godfather and it offers nothing new to the gangster formulae, but it doesn't have to. The script is poor and some of the performances are half hearted. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have chemistry together. But Sean Penn is surprisingly and awkwardly off form. The styling, visuals, cinematography and set pieces are impressive and overall I found it harmlessly enjoyable.

Tommy guns and fedoras, sometimes that's what you need. There's even one guy with a tommy gun in each hand blazing away. Gosling can't act, and lowers the quality of the film, but everyone else is very good. Feels like a dark remake of Dick Tracy and/or the Untouchables.

I can not express how disappointed I was when I saw this because it's like a poor-man's L.A. Confidential. The dialog sounds like it was ripped from some of the corniest movies set in the 40s/50s, the acting was bland (which is saying A LOT considering the cast), it was so incredibly predictable (in the first 20 minutes I knew who was going to die and when), and I've seen less ham at a pig farm. This movie is just an insult to filmmaking and it had such promise.

There's nothing to Gangster Squad. Under the gangster movie surface, it's an empty, hollow movie, and there's absolutely no reason to watch it. You trudge through it, hoping the payoff will be worth the almost two hours of your life that it takes to finish and you won't get that. The Untouchables exists so this film doesn't have to. It has an attractive cast and some touches of humor, but Gangster Squad is a cheap knockoff of one of what used to be one of the most reliable genres around.

The film makes it clear that if you really want to fight the lawless thugs of the world, you have to be as lawless as they are--a vigilante mentality that's hardly moral and upright in any context, certainly not in a rose-colored "heroic" history lesson sort of way. And that plays out in one derivative shoot-out after another, scenes that feel all too familiar. One-by-one, bad guys and good alike are pummeled, battered, riddled and gut-shot.(pluggedin.com)

DYK that Johnny Stompanato the actual bodyguard of the mafia boss in this film in his time once got aggravated and pointed a gun at actor Sean Connery on a film set only to have Connery take the gun from him, beat him and force him from the movie set? No kidding, just google it, it actually happened! Sean Connery, you awesome guy. This was tremendously entertaining but for basically all the wrong reasons. When the cast have fun with it they can be bearable - Penn is AMAZING - but for the most part feel wasted, while the direction is far too flashy and over-the-top, when it's not being Noir 101. But after Crazy Stupid Love it was nice to see Gosling and Stone as a pairing again.

While there isn't anything in here that's spectacularly well-done, or even anything that we haven't seen before (and arguably done better), the flick is a throwback to the crime-dramas of old and in that respect I actually really enjoyed what I saw. Everyone's performances were really well-done (with particular emphasis on Sean Penn's performance, but, everybody loves a good bad guy). Sure there's loose ends, sure it's formulaic, sure the guy(s) get(s) the girl(s) in the end. But it's well-done.

He shoots a gangster film with cartoonish tricks -- the disposable visual effects, the clichéd slow-mos --, inserts one or two of his gags and gore scenes, and that's it. I predicted this would be THE UNTOUCHABLES and L.A. CONFIDENTIAL in a blender, and I wasn't far wrong. This chronicle of the "battle for Los Angeles' soul" between the Gangster Squad (duh) and Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) has little new to offer--besides the novelty of acknowledging that the hero (Josh Brolin) is a tactical moron. On the plus side, the acting is generally quite good, the period detail is rich, and there's some good action to be found. But it's wasted on a lame, derivative script.

As historically accurate as DICK TRACY, but still enjoyable, providing a considerable amount of pleasure from its bask in the stylishly glossy 1940s period décor; combined with a fun (and well-stacked) cast, this is entertaining for a while, highlighted by Penn’s vicious and hissable villain. Runs too long, with sluggish pacing bogging the film down; given the characters are unsophisticated archetypes, they become less interesting the more time you spend with them. Worth a look.

Don't get me wrong, this is totally trash, but it's trash that's patched over with just enough slickness to make it tasty brainless junk food. You have the neo-noir LA aesthetic ripped from thousands of better movies, Gosling and Stone doing a La La Land dry run in the background, and my personal favorite, the fastest gun in the West inexplicably time traveling to 1949.

Gangster Squad does a good job of updating gangster movies for a new millennium. It is hard to make another one of these because people associate gangster movies with a group of people Pachino, De Niro, Pesci, etc. I think the cast of this movie did a great job of making a new gangster movie. Josh Brolin was out-of-the-park with his character. Sean Penn did a great job of playing Mickey Cohen. I could see myself watching this again and again. I would recommend it to anyone.

I've been waiting for a rock-solid period piece like this. The casting made it feel legitimately of the time (with the exception of Emma Stone). Fantastic action, no superfluous sex scenes... Just a fun watch.

A great cast and cool direction almost make this a good period crime thriller, despite the convoluted plot and silly devices. Almost.
