While there are some quirky holes{like how did the director get these hardcore mobsters to be so open? Interesting how he doesn't press harder for details from them...} this film delivers on its intimate picture of Russian mobsters. It's interesting to see how by nature these mobsters are no different than elsewhere in the world, but it's the nation that they live in that defined them. The USSR made their crime world more influential and perhaps preferable and less corrupt than the law itself.
