Let's dress up Audrey Hepburn, shall we? Now I prefer the black sweater and pants she wears in her boho solo, you may be more into the cheesy gowns. Creepy ol' Fred Astaire doesn't care either way, he's just trying to get some. 50s populism. Not happening anymore.

Audrey Hepburn is totally adorable as ever. The rest of the movie unfortunately isn't on par. It asks just way too much suspension of disbelief. Foremost in the romantic coupling of Hepburn and Astaire; the age difference is too big, which the movie never overcomes. Secondly in the fact that Hepburn (at the start) is supposed to be too plain to ever be a model, which of course is totally unbelievable. The songs and dances weren't of the grand quality I expected with this cast and crew.

"Funny Face" subscribes to a superficial romance and black and white idea of intellectualism vs. vanity in its poking fun at 50's fashion culture. But, I've yet to meet someone who is immune to the sight of Hepburn and Astaire prancing around in the colorful nightclubs and lamp-lit streets of Paris.

A gorgeous production is brought down by the fact that Hepburn and Astaire can't sing, most of the songs aren't really good, and there's a lot of hostility towards intellectuals and the fashion industry, the two cultures this film's about.

Ridiculous tripe that not even Hepburn's screen presence and nice shots of Paris can save.

The cast and crew clearly savor the opportunity to dance in famous Parisian locales and there actually is chemistry between the leads (despite their distracting age difference). What's more distracting is its never-ending barrage of unnatural and bizarre moments - which are really just a bunch of 1950's musical cliches strung together with no integrity or consistency. The whole movie I thought they were saying, "impracticalism" and not "empathicalism" which I suppose is telling.

Rewatched. Very pretty film with loads of talent and charm but fails to turn its rather flippant attitude into anything meaningful. Astaire and Hepburn look like they're having fun but don't gel romantically at all. As a result, the ending totally bombs.

Aistaire is charming&the film is vibrant &beautiful to look at but the songs are mediocre and the romance is written out rather than being acted out, a thoroughly fabricated affair.watched it bc after Charade more of Hepburn in Paris directed by Donen seemed like a great choice. If I was hoping for more than Hepburn looking super fashionable and whimiscally dancing I was shortchanged, but Hepburn can carry a movie on her own even if all around her quickly becomes a forgettable blur.

I'd grumble about the plot, but in a lot of musicals, there's not much there anyway other than an excuse to get our characters together. I disliked Kay Thompson's character at first, but as she belted out her show tunes, really appreciated her more. The story is basic; the song and dance numbers a little better -- I most liked Astaire's toreador dance and Hepburn's freestyle in the club. I know if I had meet Bohemian Audrey in my younger years, there's no doubt I'd be an empathicalist too.

Apart from Hepburn cutting loose in a Parisian café and Astaire busting out some impressive dance moves, there is not a lot to see here. I guess some of the songs are okay. The lack of chemistry between Hepburn and Astaire is a major distraction.

Wanted to like this but there's something off about how the movie makes fun of "beatniks" and "intellectuals" that feels mean and, in retrospect, kind of reactionary.

inappropriate, creepy, boho for no reason, sexist and materilazing, anti-intellectuality. Astaire's 5 minutes Matador Dance in Paris for no reason ? An American in Paris doing an aggressive spanish dance for his love for no logical reason ? Lol Creepy Love Interest and poor plot. Very poor on musical part cuz nobody can sing here. Good production, nice sceneries and fine color grading. That's all.

The look of creeping confusion on my face as it was revealed that Audrey Hepburn was the one with the "Funny Face". They didn't even try to make her wear glasses!

I had always heard this was pretty mediocre Audrey, but I thought it was pretty great and a lot of fun. The age difference is distracting, but nothing new in a Hepburn movie. The on location Paris stuff is great and it looks like everyone is having a great time. Astaire's character is problematic but I found it extremely charming and fun. Maybe it just got me at the right moment. Takes some suspension of disbelief to accept that Audrey would be "funny looking" to any human.

Audrey Hepburn is a delight as always. I had some fun from "how do we make this homely girl a cover star?", I mean, a bit of a comb? Her "dowdy" clothes look tailored for Gods sake. Astaire can still dance, but the age gap is just kind of weird. The song and dance routines feel like they've been done elsewhere. It's fine, it passes the time but there is better out there.

Audrey loved to dance, and in Funny Face, she finally showed the world her talent alongside Fred Astaire. Although some of the songs could have been more catchy, I thought the plot served the movie well. Audrey pulled us through to the end. Highly recommended for Audrey and Fred fans alike!

Textbook example of miscasting--the huge age difference between Hepburn and Astaire makes this film laughable, and not in a good way. Could have been a cute little flick otherwise, but this pairing just ruins everything.

So you've seen The Devil Wears Prada? Wanna see the 1950's depiction of Vogue Magazine? A lot of people think Anne Hathaway has some similarities to Audrey Hepburn, so Audrey here is the awkward ingenue who becomes a fashion model as opposed to working behind the scenes (Audrey Hepburn & fashion elegance go like bread & butter anyway). Fred Astaire plays the fashion photographer who wants Audrey as his muse. Kay Thompson gets the arrogant Meryl Streep magazine editor part, not so overbearing.

I got the feeling that this would have been more impressive in 1957. A bunch of visual tricks that are silly now might have been cool back then. I actually kind of liked the movie, even though it's clearly not intended for my gender, but the singing and dancing was my least favourite part. That's not good news, for a musical.

Fred Astaire is magical, Audrey Hepburn is believable and Kay Thompson surprisingly steals a number of scenes. The chemistry is wonderful and Gershwin music tops it off! Wonderful musical.

Beautiful settings, great dance numbers (Fred was wonderful, Audrey holds her own especially with the Bohemian solo dance), good vocals (wow, Audrey sure can sing!). The comedic plot is light and fluffy, delightful at times, but quite supercial too (esp. with the rants about "empathicalism"). Audrey is very charming, but I thought her romance with Fred here is very unconvincing, which is one of the major weak points of this movie.

Vacuous intellectualism and the fashion industry alike are satirized here, but the satire is only part of the film's appeal: Stanley Donen's immensely inventive direction, the brilliant choreography, the dazzling use of color and light, the songs, Fred Astaire as good as ever, Audrey Hepburn at her most winning...the satire on philosophy may seem a bit uncomfortable, and the resolution feels rushed, but it's a small price to pay for the amount and level of entertainment on display here.

She's cute, but once again Audrey Hepburn plays the same character she was pigeon holed as, you know, that waifish, annoyingly saccharine ingenue. And what makes it worse is that she's kind of tone deaf when she sings. But I will give her credit for her dancing, now there is where her talent lies.
