During his bizarre career director Edgar G. Ulmer was known to get a lot out of a minimal budget. What From Nine to Nine (1936) proves is that he couldn't work miracles, getting absolutely nothing out of a standard mid-30s mystery. Not even bringing well known silent actress Ruth Roland out of retirement for a one-off appearance could save this from being a snooze fest and one of the worst mysteries of the year.
