The Vince Vaughnaissance continues. I can get on board with the body switching but people acting like this girl is unattractive is some bizarre dangerous high school confidence.

There's a particularly insufferable bit of egregiously implausible Wokeness involving a kissing scene that'll cause any non-Wokester's eyes to roll over like a slot machine, but- like Happy Death Day - this is mostly a clever, self aware & fun hybrid of horror & a comedy genre that should not work. The characters are all 1-dimensional cliched movie types as well, but given the tricky tonal balance required to pull a comedic but suspenseful amalgam like this off it's probably for the best

Very fun. Both leads did an effective job playing both themselves and each other and the twist on the whole Freaky Friday body-swap thing was cleverly done. Seeing the killer inside a small, teen body and figuring out how to use that to his advantage was a big highlight as was seeing a teen girl in a giant body trying to convince everyone what’s going on without getting arrested. Well acted and super funny at times. I liked it more than Happy Death Day. Recommended.

In the 90s, we pretended conventionally good looking high school girls were unattractive because they wore glasses. Here? Um, uh, is it because she wears discount clothes? Which is something we'd never pick up on, so we need a character to point this out. ANYWAYS, if you like Happy Death Day, then you'll probably enjoy this. This film is basically just every high school film trope mixed with a body swap film and it works!

The trailer for Freaky suggested a horror-comedy with a hyper-self-aware tone. In actuality, there are aspects of slasher gore, comedy that seems to exclusively accompany Vaughn, and not a lot else. The 1st act is dull, setting up unlikable side characters who will inevitably be slaughtered. Things pick up after the body-swap, but the film is still plagued by logical inconsistencies and stupid character decisions. Vaughn carries the film. Newton is decent. Also what school has a cryo-chamber?

Another fun horror comedy from director/writer Christopher Landon see a shy teenage girl and mass murderer switching bodies for a day. I was excited to see more of Landon's work after watch ing "Happy Death Day" and really liking it. He continues to breathe life into the horror comedy genre with some fun, original ideas. Vaughn and Newton play their parts perfectly and were very enjoyable to watch. Some jokes fell flat, but that didn't stop me from liking it. I give 8 ancient knives out of 10.

It's pitch day 2021. Christopher Landon walks into Blumhouse to meet with his producers for a fourth time. In his hand is a list of popular and gimmicky films with the words "but in high school with serial killers" beside every one.

This made me miss the theater, this would be a perfect wee popcorn job. The leads were dialed in and that helps a lot but you'll know every beat before it comes if you have seen a movie and that's just fine.

Pretty much what you'd expect after Happy Death Day 2 U; Landon has his beats that he keeps going back to both as a writer and a director. Some of it works pretty well, some of it is just Vaugn and Newton playing generic psycho and teenage girl tropes rather than each other's characters. I'm not saying you should watch Tragedy Girls instead of this, but in terms of circular saw kills, get your priorities straight.

"It's a funny and mostly enjoyable good film but nothing really to write home about. Refreshing to see something new in theaters and I thought they did an adequate job for this plot. Vince Vaughn definitely steals the show and gives it his all, making the film much better than it would have been." -My Letterboxd review

Pretty fun all things considered! I mean this isn't the movie you should come to for great characters, dialogue, or storytelling. This is only supposed to be fun and occasionally jump-scary, and it was exactly that. I'm developing a soft spot for Kathryn Newton, who was really good in Blockers two years ago and does the job here. Ditto for Vince Vaughn, which is something I never thought I'd say; from personal box office poison to reliable hand is a journey I never thought we'd take together.

It sounded fun, but it's a failure in every respect. I'm honestly not at all sure if the moments that seem to be sincere attempts at injecting the genre mix with some heart are meant as a satire or not.

Freaky is as generic & schlocky as they come when it comes to the horror/comedy sub-genre. It’s as by the books as it comes in structure & story beats, leaving no room to really perform outside its restrictive box. Its sole backbone is the elevation of the Vaughn/Newton duo, and to their credit, they are quite solid, if not slightly unspectacular however. Freaky is a fine way to pass time as it does just enough in most aspects, but it’s not very memorable on any level.

A decent horror comedy that's elevated quite a bit by Vaughn's wonderful performance as a teenage girl trapped in his body. Newton is good as the killer trapped in her body, but is it even slightly believable that she's unpopular?

This is like a cheap mix of Freaky Friday and Friday the 13th. Somewhat gory at times and with plenty of jump scares, so expect it to be a bit like 'I Know What You Did Last Summer'-ish. Its ok. I kind of like the body swap aspect, though it does seem cheesily cliched in terms of the horror tropes but of course its mainly a black/dark comedy poking fun at such things. A bit daft and certainly quirky, this provides some entertainment, sure, it'll appeal to a younger audience I imagine.

Somehow doesn’t really do anything wrong yet somehow doesn’t manage to turn a brilliant concept, a very willing cast and decent practical effects into the magic it so clearly should be. One gets the feeling the makers were so happy with the idea they didn’t bother with a funnier script.

There's a sprinkle of wokeness I'm willing to look past (and I'm not referring to the scene where a man in his 50's is tonguing a supposed minor). Body-swap-schtick is really hard to mess up. Is there even a setup more delicious for this trope than a teenage girl and a middle aged serial killer? This will entertain a fan of horror comedy surely.

This succeeds in its humor and maybe not so much in its horror. Both Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton are quite entertaining once they switch bodies with plenty of laughs to be had. The reliance on sexual assault as a plot point in several scenes is a really odd jump from an otherwise relaxing viewing.

Pretty similar to "Happy Death Day" in feel and atmosphere. There's horror and tension but with a light hearted garnish. But "Freaky" has a better premise, but poorer execution. The truth is that body swaps and time loops are both tired, overused tropes, and if you want to recycle something like that, you're going to have to do a hell of a job at it.

SCREAM-wannabe is diverting enough, with Landon subverting genre expectations even as he pays homage to ghosts of genre's past (Kubrick especially!), getting one of Vaughn's best and most relaxed performance to date (even as he takes a page from the JUMANJI sequels). A shame that its best moments are almost swamped by awkward, superficial insertions of nods to "woke" culture which are cringey rather than inspiring; Newton is also never quite convincing during her mid-section character change.

Drunk on the possibilities of unmined horror/comedy subgenre mashups, Little Little Joe gave us this. It's not awful, and I appreciate the effort, but this was kind of a failed experiment. Body Swap comedies require two interesting lead characters. While the performances were fine, I kind of tapped out on caring what the villain did halfway in.

Basic switch. Killer new look. When the mystical ancient dagger of the ruthless serial killer 'The Butcher' causes him and Millie to wake up in each other's bodies, Millie discovers she has only 24 hours to avoid being permanently trapped in the body of a murderous murderer. psychopath. The biggest obstacle is that she has the appearance of a middle-aged maniac, who is the target of a city-wide manhunt. With the help of her friends, Millie races against the clock to break the curse.

Freaky is obviously the horror/comedy variation of Freaky Friday, just as Happy Death Day was the horror/comedy variation of Groundhog Day - so is it anything crazy original or special? No, I wouldn't necessarily say that, but I do think it's a lot of fun for what it is....which is exactly what you think it'll be.

There were a lot of ways this could've gone horribly wrong, but thankfully it gets pretty much everything right. While there are some dated cliches, it's easy to ignore them. The tone is well-balanced, there's lots of fun kills, the performances are great, & the pacing is spectacular. Newton & Vaughn both play excellent serial killers- and teenage girls. The script is funny & full of heart, & a true love of horror is clearly there. As a fun twist on a familiar idea, this hits the mark.

Landon is getting so good at this type of self-consciously-cliched-but-pretty-well-executed-and-truly-fun horror. BillyShears, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the Vaughnaissance (nice). For fans of this genre/brand of horror comedy then this is worth watching, if for no other reason than it's a pleasure watching Vaughn be a teen girl.
