Some stuff happens, and then it ends. This B&W animation directed by Burton is better than his recent live action films, but it's equally forgettable. Burton's once distinguishable and interesting style is just too predictable and boring by now. Nice little references to original Universal monster movies, but the story and overall plot is just bland.

While I enjoyed the simplicity at points, overall the whole film felt very flat for me. I left feeling disappointed and unaffected, which is not what I was expecting whatsoever. Whatever, at least Burton is trying to reach back into his roots and discover something new, even if it is as dull as this movie.

ironic that a film deemed unreleasable pre-fame has been remade as a feature-length that probably would've made it past the studio examination first time round. there's the ghost of something pallid and obsessive and tragic here, but it's lost among the creepy-campy theatrics, quirky visual spectacle and, worst of all, the cowardly backtracking of the ending. for a man so strongly associated with darkness and morbidity, burton sure seems scared of teaching hard lessons or unveiling sad truths.

Not as bad as Burton's other recent work. Frankenweenie is a great rendition of his distinctive style and looks great. The story is decent and starts out very well in the first half hour or so - as the movie progresses, the story becomes more and more sloppy. The script just starts making excuses to throw in as many references as it possibly can during the final act. I was hoping that the ending would take a different turn, but it is a kids movie, so I'm not sure why I expected anything else.

It's fine. It's simplicity makes me think they probably should have just left it as a short that was maybe a little longer than the live action original. I couldn't really get into it and it started to drag pretty earlier in the runtime. It has some nice homages to old horror movies but overall it's a decent movie that I don't have any interest in seeing again.

Frankenweenie would make a great short film. With stunning claymation its hard not to want to like it. It just can't stretch the weak "things are never introduced or explained" plot over a feature length film. The movie would have also benefited from having a more clear cut direction, as its horror movie homage, and darker themes aren't fully explored due to its younger audience. Overall this film just felt like a weak vehicle for some impressive claymation.

This is Burton at his very best. He has completely redeemed himself for his recent catastrophes and released what is quite possibly my favourite film of the year (so far). With crisp visuals, numerous references to classic horror and sci-fi and a story that, while hardly groundbreaking, touched me on a very personal level. I'm not ashamed to say that I choked up thrice (in my defence, this came out around the same time my pet almost died, so I was still quite touchy).

Burton hasn't brought his A-game in awhile and this is no exception. It's a remake of his short and inexplicably combines the B&W aesthetic with animation. The result is a drab washed out looking film where nothing looks interesting or appealing. I understand what Burton was going for with his monster matinee homage but it just doesn't work. There's the usual Burton quirks but the dark humor is so mediocre and predictable like most of his recent efforts. It's slightly charming but forgettable.

No boy did more for his dog than young Victor Frankenstein; he brings Sparky, his only friend in a suburban wasteland, back from the dead--and when the secret gets out, chaos ultimately ensues. A delightful homage to classic horror and a very touching tale of devotion, with lovely animation and excellent voice work across the board. The script is a bit messy and wobbly, but it has enough heart and humor--and psycho Sea Monkeys--to compensate. Fine score, including the lovely song "Strange Love".

I feel like "postwar suburban America as incarnation of oppressive conformity" is a symbol that's been fully co-opted by the kind of normative society it's trying to critique. In particular, Tim Burton doesn't really seem to be thinking about what effects marginalization could have on anyone beyond a nerdy white boy, leading to a lot of vaguely racist and ableist design and characterization. Also, the actual message of the movie is vague and confused, with the climax contradicting itself.

After stooping to unbelievable lows over the course of at least a decade, Tim Burton did wisely to return to his beginnings with this full-length remake of his own 1984 live-action short, in an animated style resembling his 1982 short Vincent. The new Sparky is the most adorable animated dog I've seen since Bruno in The Triplets of Belleville. Sadly, the script itself fails to revitalize its patchwork of dead cliches. The last half hour in particular is slavishly conventional.

It's Burton most relevant picture since Big Fish and also the best animated feature of 2012. The director finally returns to what he does best -- horror stories that pay homage to the old Hollywood monsters and creepy weirdos --, successfully updating the short feature in a mesmerizing (and rare) black and white animation feature with Edward-like scenarios and hilariously dark characters.

Amazing craft is spoiled on a story that reeks of familiarity. The animation is beautiful and I really enjoyed the nods to classic horror films, but the whole thing feels like Tim Burton going through his usual paces. The Danny Elfman score sounds like a variation on his previous Burton soundtracks and worst of all is a climax that seems taken directly from Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow. It's fun, but lacks originality.

For a long time, I haven't enjoyed anything Burton did. this is where I stop I think; it is a second serving of the same ideas with slightly better animation. Burton has been doing so many remakes lately that I guess it was inevitable to remake one of his own. The result is the closest that he's come to a good movie in ages. It's based on his early short that was vital in starting his career. I must applaud him for making this in black and white and keeping the style very close to B-horrors of the 50's. It's scary, funny and sad without feeling like a compromise between family and horror film. Hopefully he will repeat the same in live action one day.

Typical Tim Burton aesthetic, another beautiful score by Elfman and a cute (re)animated dog. It pays homage to a bunch of different horror and monster movies but ultimately the third act falls flat and made me wonder what the point of it all was. This is the stuff Tim Burton excels at. Heck, he's even made this film before. Weird loner kids, mad scientists, supernatural monsters harkening back to various horror genre icons. Having succeeded at The Nightmare Before Christmas you wouldn't expect him to fail here. The characters are well-realised and the pacing is right. The b&w aesthetic works, and while it's not a very kid-friendly film, teenagers and adults should be able to enjoy it. Comedic, gothic, and designed for horror lovers.

A return to classic form for Burton, for the most part. I have a minor reservation with the Japanese character, Toshiaki - he isn't in the movie much but he is really an unnecessary racist caricature. Setting that aside, however, this movie has a lot of old-school Burton heart and soul, and also provided a lot of great laughs. It's definitely a good time.

I enjoyed the short better, if not just for the rhyming couplets and the Vincent Price narration, but still, there's enough charm and ideas about ethical science, suburban decay and loyalty and devotion to make an okay film, or at least, a film on par with Pixar's release this year (Brave.) Still, even with all the things it does well, with it's art direction and atmosphere, it's interesting and original beginning runs it's course into a rather generic ending.

Return to form or type? You decide. Frankly it worked for me, but then all the necessary elements were in place (e.g homage to Universal monster movies, references to Burton's own films, black and white imagery, and a melancholy undercarriage). A fine effort nonetheless that tugs on the heartstrings without seeming overly manipulative. But while it's a lovingly crafted extension of his original short, it is hard to ignore the feeling of deja vu, even if it is his best work in quite some time.

The boy and his dog relationship works - and is even quite touching at points - but the rest of the story is all pretty meh, perhaps reflecting the fact it comes from a 30-year-old idea. I still think there's something a bit too CGI-like about Burton's stop motion work - what's the point of all that time and effort if it looks like it was done on a computer anyway? Another tolerable offering from him then - at least this one isn't a musical.

Starts with a bang! Lots humor, character and clever tidbits. Surprisingly faithful to the short while taking it down truer horror path with monster mayhem ensuing... which made for a nice homage but it wasn't even mildly scary. And while part of me liked that not every child got a good ending, I didn't like how Victor was the only one, and how special the movie made him and his pet. Seriously none of the other zombie pets or the LIVING cat are worth sympathizing over like a dog?

Some of the character designs were cool too. I wish their facial expressions had been better though - a lot of the time they just didn't match the voice or situation. The kid voicing the main character was terrible; he conveyed very little emotion & was just plain dull most of the time. It's kinda forgettable, but not offensively bad.

Even though this movie had it all, the animation, the directing from Burton and good voice acting... it really wasn't always entertaining. The very beginning of the movie was taken from Tim Burton's short film almost frame by frame. That annoyed, because he did not bother to fix the faults of the old editing. The homages pile up high in this movie and they are fun to recognize. This seems to be a very personal film for Burton in some ways: the little child cinephile can only be a young Burton and, of course, this is a redoing of his first really successful short film. It's a fun ride, but the concept is essentially one big homage/parody to/of Frankenstein and classic black and white horror movies, so it does lack much character of its own.

Plus the dark humor pales in comparison to A Nightmare Before Christmas. It's about as ho-hum as The Corpse Bride. What Corpse Bride should have been and the best thing Burton's done since he last worked in B&W. Pulls on the hearts strings in the right way and just spooky enough for kids. It runs a little low on juice towards the middle but gets a good jolt to carry it through to the end. This is also surprisingly topical as it touches upon America's near abandonment of the sciences in favor of blissful ignorance. Highly Recommended.
