Rob Lowe tries to go full Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday and steal the movie from Bill Paxton, no easy feat. The tv-movie feel doesn't do this any favors but the performances are strong and the story is in constant movement so it never dulls down below enjoyable. I was disappointed that they cut out Jesse's run in with Frankenstein's daughter but I'm an idiot so...

Even though the story was told in kind of a perfunctory manner, I really enjoyed all of the performances . I also felt it was probably more realistic than most movies that tell this story. Certainly it made these people, both the men and women more real to me. It also brought things about the civil war to my attention that I had never really thought about before.
