What begins as a laboured, seemingly predictable fantasy (with Collette sporting a convincing, though jarring, Scottish brogue) quickly turns into an endearing film about loss, and the associated strains it can place on a relationship. Never quite gets past the strange central conceit of who (or what) the child represents, and scattershoots off in too many directions (the bankrupt toy factory and its (unbelievable) resolution), but Gruffud and Collette's fine performances carry the day.
