A sweeping cinematic tour of the latter half of the 20th century, told through the eyes of one of film's most iconic characters. I'm one of those weirdos who wasn't outraged when it beat Pulp Fiction at the Oscars (back when I thought the Oscars meant a damn thing). I understand why it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I love the hell out of it.

The superb acting, the absolutely incredible music, and the (while not necessarily logical or in any way likely) story will touch anyone who has their heart in the right place. An incredible movie, and anyone who says otherwise needs to check their cynicism at the door.

The first time I saw this movie, I cried. Hard. Because I was NINE. I saw this movie again on TV last year, when I was 21... holy shit, what a maudlin mess. The only way that this film could've possibly been more Oscar-hungry would be if Forrest Gump were also deaf, homeless, and struggling to care for his young son who is growing up on the dangerous inner-city streets. Also, the kid would've had to be a genius who grows up to save the Middle East and endangered California condors and stuff.

The message of this film seems to be that even an unwitting retard can excel in all areas of life as long as he does it in a wholesome American fashion and steers clear of those woman-beating liberal bastards in the counterculture.

Unmissable. Forrest Gump teaches us that even with a low IQ, you can still live an exceptionally large life. One single man's journey through live while learning big lessons about love and trust. Serious at all the right moments, but has plenty of comedy. Romantic and historic. Not to mention, great music!

The story of Forrest Gump is an American Classic. Tom Hanks does an amazing job playing a simple-minded man who makes his way through important events in American history, like the Vietnam War and the Kennedy Assassination. I recommend this movie because it not only appeals to the adults that were alive and remember the events in Forrest's life, but it also appeals to the younger generation in providing an alternative way to learn history.

Capralike fiction with well-worked out, decent scenario and amazing visuals. But I am fed up with the sentimentality, "everyone has their shot in life". The irony of the film slowly fades away from the mind, because of the impracticality of the situation. Still one of the best Hollywood had delivered in the nineties.

Forrest Gump's life is one hell of an adventure. The way this movie highlights the historical events of the 60s, 70s and 80s is amazing. Plus the soundtrack is great: CCR, Free Bird, The Doors.

It's pretty much like someone took Being There and made it sincere rather than satirical. I didn't find anything too awful about the movie, except for the soundtrack, which is a terribly predictable selection of period classics. At times it felt like I was watching a "Freedom Rock" commercial. Mostly it's just a lot of sentimental nonsense, not too cloying but not very sophisticated, either. Very bland, easy-to-digest crowd-pleaser stuff.

Its facinating how such a simple man can live such an amazing life, see so many things and meet so many people. The movie is full of quotable quotes such as the box of chocolate quotes or one of Lt. Dan's quotes. All these things make it a very distinguished and likable movie.

One of the most insanely overloved movies ever made. What are people seeing in this treacly, over-long, cloying, saccharine epic? Is it the celebration of the dullard that makes America love this? As time goes by, even the celebrated technical tricks fail to impress. I don't get it.

A lot of people rag on this for being sentimental and manipulative; and it is, but it's pretty effective and generally well done. Hanks delivers an amazing performance, and for a film that covers roughly 35 years of history it does a remarkable job fitting in details that resonate with people's personal experiences.

What stands out the most is the excellent behind-the-scenes production values, even above some fantastic acting by Hanks. With cleverly designed sets, excellent script and direction it makes a big visual impact on the viewer with a mix of subtle special effects and intelligent use of key event of the time period. This ultimately leads to the downside as it seems to reach out to make Gump more than a ficticious character, something which can never be. Has a spirit that reaches out to the viewer.

I think your enjoyment of the film boils down to whether or not you are charmed by Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump. If you are then you can let the almost absurd levels of coincidence and luck go and enjoy the film for what it is. A charming tale of a good, simple man. And even if you hate the movie Gump's exchanges with his drill sergeant are still absolutely hilarious.

Didn't like this at all. Cheesy, corny, hokey, warm in the worst Hallmarky, feel-good way. And the music! All the rock "classics" we're all tired of! The soundtrack is a Time Life collection! This script seemed like a feel-good excuse for Zemeckis to do his Zelig thing. Vastly prefer Zelig. The cinematic version of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" and really, who wants to sit through that? Yes, is has great actors in it, but the movie? Ugh.

Are you an intelligent, well-educated chap who is nevertheless a social and financial failure? Well why not sign up for a Frontal Lobotomy 'Gump Makeover' and be transformed into a lovably moronic, world-beating colossus...Ok, there is some good stuff here too: seamless effects, Gary Sinise. Still, I just cannot embrace Gump without reaching round and punching him in the kidneys a few times, hard.

A touching, charming classic. A movie anybody could watch again and again, although it has became overrated in recent years. Jock-full of extremely memorable and recognizable quotes along with one of the most loveable movie icons of the 90s. Groundbreaking cinematography too, from the stunning Vietnam battlegrounds to the styled, inedibly detailed streets of Georgia. Although contrived, it's still a heartwarming, evocative, absurd and thought provoking drama with virtually no flaws at all.

It's schmaltzy, it's ham-fisted, yeah, sure, don't care. Forrest Gump is the purest of popcorn cinema. If I went to the theater to see a new movie and Forrest Gump played instead, I'd sit through the entire film with a smile on my face and walk out that theater not bothered in the slightest. Incredible soundtrack, cast of characters, and a winding storyline with nary a dull moment. This is not the type of movie you discuss in your film studies class and it does not need to be.

A man passes through the Sturm und Drang of the '60s unscathed, but ends up losing the one he loves the most to its unexpected consequences. I don't think it's quite the conservative film everyone makes it out to be and there's a little more subtlety to it than some give it credit for. It's definitely not art house, though. Its gender and race politics suck. Fun fact: no British Invasion on the soundtrack.

Forrest Gump delivers charm, heart, scope and a great Hanks performance. Oddly enough, I found Sinise's performance a little more enjoyable. Zemeckis' direction is great as well. However, the plot is far-fetched. The fact that the film can make you laugh, cry, sigh and cough can be attributed to its overlong runtime and clockwork setting change. The film is also a cute (shallow) overview of modern American history, but having no real connection to that history hampered my enjoyment somewhat.

Besides an obnoxiously glib performance from Hanks, this film encapsulates all the unfortunate human tendencies to trivialize politics, to sugarcoat serious history, to see world events only via the most narrow and superficial perspectives and, most American of all, to forget the past. And now for the grand finale of what has become my 'autism' trilogy: 'Forrest Gump'. What a queer idea to tour American history with an autistic protagonist. This concept is not dear to my heart, and yet not mundane enough to escape a cautious recommendation. If for nothing else, Zemeckis is a meticulous artisan worthy of some respect. So you could, like, at least watch it or whatever.

An excellent piece of escapist entertainment that still keeps its important ties to real life. The title character runs (literally) through a variety of film genres and perfectly recreated time periods in America, with certain important events being looked upon directly or obscurely (I've always been a fan of comedic historical revisionism). This film leaves me as satisfied as the title character when he's mowing a big football field.
