Spain in the 1930s is the place to be for a man of action like Robert Jordan. There is a civil war going on and Jordan who has joined up on the side that appeals most to idealists of that era -- like Ernest Hemingway and his friends -- has been given a high-risk assignment up in the mountains... It's faithful to Hemingway's book: it shows cruelty on both sides of the conflict.Note that the film was released during WW2.

Extravagant movie of a major novel from Ernest Hemingway, starring two of the giants of cinema, Gary Cooper & Ingrid Bergman, lasting nearly 3 hours in full Technicolor! Had the be good, and it was. Though not as amazing as it wanted to be, seemingly aiming for Gone with the Wind (1939) levels. The story just wasn't as intricate and the chemistry between Bergman and Cooper wasn't really there, making their long dialog driven scenes a major bore. The film shined more when there was action.

Fatally overlong and dialogue heavy Hemingway adaptation is at least attractively designed and photographed, with Bergman especially incandescent coming off the back of CASABLANCA, but as he is so often, Cooper performs like a dull, wet blanket, suffocating any signs of life around him. The actual destruction of the bridge is genuinely exciting (and shows the seeds of KWAI in its execution) and the climax is quite moving, but by then it's too little too late.

Dull, overlong and looks very dated in places but has a few moments of interest and tension.

Lumbering wartime romantic melodrama in which Howard Roark finds himself a premature anti-fascist. Nice to look at.

faithful screen adaptation to the hemingway novel...great dialogue which actually improves upon the book's by eliminating a lot of the obscure phrases...katina paxinou is fantastic in her oscar winning portrayal of pilar......quite long but i didn't mind and the build up to the deadline to blow the bridge is quite suspenseful.

I wish it was shorter (it was 2 hr 45 min). I didn't like Maria character that much, but I guess the charm of Ingrid Bergman helped. Good actress.

This should have been great. Guerilla warfare, cast of colorful characters, star power, romance, action, Hemingway. But it's basically a non-starter. Maybe it's the length but it just never really takes off. Cooper in particular is sleepwalking through it. It's not bad, it's just not noteworthy.

Good performances, fine production design by William Cameron Menzies, WAY the hell too talky. Worse, it's hard to root for the struggle against fascism here since a couple of the characters are gypsies, and are given racist crap by the "heroes"
