For Me and My Gal

Finally Gene Kelly enters my world! Perhaps trying a little too hard to fit the Hollywood mold in his debut film, but whenever he was on stage dancing and performing it was with such amazing grace! Even as a scrappy old hobo clown! Match him with Judy Garland and you have something magical up there. Busby Berkeley directs a highly polished Hollywood showbiz movie with mild elements of the war. Lacks that extra spark in the story to become a all-time classic, but it's definitely one worth loving.

Some fantastic tunes in this one. Kelly's performance is great considering it was his film debut.

Can only barely be considered a musical as it leans heavy on the dramatic (and eventually, propaganda) tone as time goes on and the scale of the pieces are so small. Interesting as the first screen appearance of Gene Kelly, but this role seems a bit too complex for him at this early date. Judy Garland basically saves this single-handed.

A llikable musical with an engaging cast well direction by Busby Berkeley. As fitting for 1942, it has a patriotic theme.
