A neat little thriller in which a blackmailer and a murderer attempt to ensnare each other. The plot begins to get a little far-fetched towards the end, but the constantly shifting power-play between Granger and Simmons is enough to keep you interested throughout. Simmons' character, in particular, is wonderfully ambiguous - twisted and vulnerable in equal measure.

"Footsteps in the Fog" showcases a pair of morally ambiguous characters intricately weaving through the plot. Their actions grow increasingly devious and clever, culminating in an inevitable conclusion. Stewart Granger and Jean Simmons, among Hollywood's most illustrious couples at the time, both deliver remarkable performances in this film.

Even though the rationality is lost along the way, Footsteps in the Fog deserves a recognition for the sake of original characters. They act unexpectedly which gives them murky personalities worthy of the name of the film. It's not just another story with heartless murderers and saints that fight for justice. Contrary everyone's imperfect and self-centred. However, all the rest happen so fast that the film can't leave enough impression. It could definitely benefit from longer runtime.

This gothic melodrama benefits from an unpredictable plot which casts doubts about who is the victim or the schemer. Jean Simmons is the highlight of this movie. Like the movie her character embodies tropes from both the gothic melodrama and -noir by being a lovestruck victim as well as a manipulative femme fatale. Simmons strikes the perfect balance between innocence and cunning to portray both, often at the same time. Grangers charisma goes a long way in making his character engaging.

Senaryonun fazlaca kıvrak olma çabası biraz can sıkıcı. Kötü değil aslında ama neredeyse her açıdan türün tipik bir örneği.

Unsubtle melodrama, slightly over done on the lighting/shadows and soundtrack but quite enjoyable and undemanding.

Victorian-era suspense drama with two charismatic leads, which lags when they're not together on screen.
