Flyboys
2006
Drama, Action

Flyboys, the first World War I aviation film in over 40 years, is inspired by the epic, courageous tale of the American young men who would become known as the legendary Lafayette Escadrille. They were ordinary boys who volunteered for the First World War looking for adventure, and in the process, they became heroes. Never before has a movie so accurately portrayed the thrill and danger of the aerial dogfights that played such an integral role in the Allied resistance. (MGM)

Charmingly and endearingly old fashioned war film takes a page from the John Wayne war movie canon to put on a fun show, though I don't think the Duke would have lapsed into the cornball sentimental romance which dominates the second act; I'm a fighter plane anti-expert, but the CGI-d dogfights didn't look quite realistic to me! Still sort of irresistible for a while, especially as the carefully ethnically diverse team are training and getting to know each other. Good fun, warts and all.

Gelme lan gelme.

The heroics of the American flying aces of World War I are little known to many of us nearly a century later. And this relatively restrained film (for a war actioner in a post-Saving Private Ryan moviemaking world), does a superior job of reviving interest in and respect for these brave men and their captivating era. What a total garbage, this movie is so commercial and obvious it hurts, think of every stereotype of this kind of movie and you would be short.

True to it's title, it sort of flies between propaganda film and a movie that tries to show the horrors of war. Still, I enjoyed it.

"Flyboys may be inspired by true events, but director Tony Bill's evocation of an air squadron's exploits during WWI is a sham no amount of droopy-dog posturing by James Franco can alleviate." - Ed Gonzalez

Why was every airplane the Red Baron? This doesn't make sense. I'm not a huge stickler for historical accuracy, but there was nothing to learn or to be grounded to reality with in this movie. And James Franco's accent was in about every other scene. And there was a tiger in the mansion. And everyone learned a lesson in the end. Because if WW1 is known for anything, it's for the moral lessons. If you're ever caught wondering "why do people hate Hollywood movies again?" think of Flyboys.

An historically inaccurate disaster of a movie with crappy CGI, bad acting and a romance story that goes nowhere. Supposed to be based on a true story, but I can't figure out if the ending is a mocking joke or a tribute.

I've learned that pilots had it easy compared to the grunts in the trenches. For guys that get to live in a mansion with a freaking lion and fly around as "kinghts" in the skies, they sure do whine a lot. I'm glad they didn't volunteer for the trenches. I can't imagine the the whining if they had to endure trech foot and constant shelling not to mention gas attacks and rats. Despite the total inaccuracy, melodrama, and the paint by numbers plot, I can still think of worse ways to spend my time.

As much as I like James Franco and Martin Henderson, apart from the eye candy this film had absolutely nothing going for it. Nothing.

A story set in WW1, an era largely untouched by Hollywood. There were some criticism of historical inaccuracy. The tendency of Hollywood to introduce a romantic subplot into every film nearly destroyed this one...

A waste of the talents of Franco and Reno and one of the most disgustingly awful films I've ever had the displeasure of seeing.

What the hell, James Franco the new James Dean ???? After seeing this movie I can assure you that's not the case. ... The film is supposed to be based on a true story, but for some reason the script and the bad acting takes the magic out of it. ... Try harder Tony Bill !!!!
