Fleshpot on 42nd Street

Yes, the film looks awful; has a bad sndtrk (Mission Impossible for the rough john?); the actors seem to have more commitment than experience; & the writer unnecessarily contrives an implausible storyline to have a plot, but what's it worth to time travel & see a subculture as it really was rather than a Hollywood version? Although it's a work of fiction this portrait of hookers & drag queens in 1972 is so unflinchingly honest it feels like it must have been made by someone embedded in the life

Honestly even moreso than those big pictures of the early 20th century it’s crazy that this thing is around for us to be able to watch in 2022. Why would we want to I’m sure every actor involved in this would wonder but still. A great relic of New York history (not only the reality of New York in the 70’s but also a real look at queer/weirdo spaces of the era). A very bleak picture. Shot with no regard for cinematic rule or care which is obviously interesting but makes it a slog

Terrible lighting. I guess the overall plot was that she can't escape her life and terrible things happen to her and she can't find happiness? Cherry was great. Fav scene: Cherry's zings at the diner.

Such a bitter outlook on life :( The brightest point (and only entertaining actor) in the movie is the transvestite character Cherry.
