Based on the HG Wells story. The world is delighted when a space craft containing a crew made up of the world's astronauts lands on the moon, they think for the first time. But the delight turns to shock when the astronauts discover an old British flag and a document declaring that the moon is taken for Queen Victoria proving that the astronauts were not the first men on the moon... The film's 'future' dates itself with the "United Nations Space Agency" - which is infinitely hilarious - and on that front the script has a whimsy that lends it enough charm to be passable (anti-gravity paint!). Beautiful production design, too. But this frivolity backfires - our lead character is a world-class dick, not only committing identity fraud on his beautiful girlfriend - but laughing off the unintentional genocide of an entire alien civilization.

A bit funny and a bit cute, but still a bit too simple even its age taken into concideration.

Ooof. Not even the Harryhausen can save it. I'm fine with made-up-ium science fiction but this is risible. Wallace and Gromit's Grand Day is more scientifically accurate. It feels like the original parable was lost trying to make an action-adventure tale.

A little disappointing, given how zany it all is. I would have liked an adaptation that treated the source material with a bit more intrigue and a little less romance and slapstick. My brother likened it to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and, funnily enough, both films star Lionel Jeffries in an eccentric role. That being said, it's a lot of fun for what it is and it's certainly not a complete butchery. Worth a look for Harryhausen and Wells fans.

Great opening setup. It was nice that the cast included a woman on the trip to the moon, albeit with the usual tropes. So many scientific questions. Setting on Earth was similar to The Time Machine with the turn of the century inventor. During the trial scene I was yelling at the TV to not reveal too much about the Earth to an unknown species! I didn't appreciate the nonchalant attitude toward genocide. Couldn't the Selenites freeze themselves when they got sick? Fav scene: chickens.

A very silly but enjoyable movie. Personally I enjoy the first half before they get to the moon more, but there's pleasures all along the way. Lionel Jeffries' overacting is just as ridiculous and fun as the rest of it, while the other two cast members are completely overshadowed by him.

Has the feel of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in terms of Englishness, eccentric inventors, colouring and style. The moon effects all look dated coupled with a very simple narrative, this hasn't stood the test of time.

Poor effects, poor acting and silly humourous parts ruined this. The lovely 'The Time Machine' was made 4 years earlier so there's no excuse. Watch that instead.

Some things are just better books! - The HG Wells story was dated when the film was made. Marry that with average stop frame animation, now very unimpressive SFX and a pedestrian pace and the problems mount. A good cast but just too much foam rubber and polysytrene for any film to be taken seriously however much a child of the sixties

a relatively interesting plot, but it's too farcical to be of any real entertainment value. the story is a bit bungled, and for being the sixties not too bad, but nothing really serious to see here, no a waste of time though.

This whole school of 19th-century science fiction was getting really old by this point
